This portrait by Alonso Sánchez Coello shows a dual feminine aspect in the context of the courtly or courtly space: the position of those noblewomen who belonged to royalty, and also of those who accompanied them and formed part of the circles of power, occupying the royal offices of the Chamber or the Household.

The Infanta Clara Eugenia, depicted by Sánchez Coello, is depicted with a portrait of her father Philip II in one of her hands. The Infanta was a woman of great intellectual worth and a great support to her father in the tasks of government, a fact that possibly authorised her to marry at the age of 32, handing her the government of the Low Countries and the duchy of Burgundy, where the Infanta earned the respect of her subjects. On the other hand, Magdalena Ruiz, pictorially depicted as subordinate to the Infanta, was part of the court of the Habsburgs and was considered a royal plaything, valued among the European courts. She was married, widowed and raised two children: the daughter was to become a nun and the son a servant to the king. In addition to being in the service of Joan of Austria (married to John Manuel of Portugal), she was appreciated by Philip II, who wrote several comments about her in letters sent to his daughters during his stay at the Portuguese court.

The post Infanta Isabel Clara Eugenia accompanied by Magdalena Ruiz first appeared on History Lab.

Silk hampers with grey warp-flowing floats and zigzag and scroll decoration. Short to the waist, it is made from four panels: two at the front and two at the back. The front panels have a deep peak which is closed with 25 buttonholes corresponding to the buttons with a wooden core and lined with a small cord forming a taffeta weave. The doublet was a close-fitting garment, basically for men, which covered the trunk of the body, usually with skirts. It could be sleeveless, or have fixed or replacement sleeves. It was usually padded with bird feathers, cotton or layers of fabric and was worn with tights. It is a garment that forms part of some folk costumes in various countries and regions.

The post Silk Hump first appeared on History Lab.

Hernán Cortés is now considered the discoverer of the Baja California peninsula, although the first European to land there was Fortún Jiménez (who thought it was an island). Cortés undertook in 1529, while in Spain, to send soldiers to discover islands and territories in the South Sea where his main aim was to find a link between the Pacific and the Atlantic in addition to land and the more than possible and coveted precious metals such as gold. Embarked on the ship San Lázaro, Cortés arrived at Bahía de la Santa Cruz on 3 May 1535, a territory now known as La Paz, located in Baja California del Sur, where Fortún Jiménez died. There he established a colony with materials and soldiers from Sinaloa where, due to bad weather, only one of the ships in charge of transporting supplies appeared. The supply problem was considerable and the discoverer returned to New Spain to supply the region, leaving the province under the command of Francisco de Ulloa. However, in the face of general discontent and unrest, the viceroy ordered the settlers to return to the same destination to which Cortés had gone.

The post Map of the province of Baja California discovered by Hernán Cortés first appeared on History Lab.

Programme dedicated to Anne of Austria (1601-1666). Daughter of Philip III, she became Queen of France alongside King Louis XIII. She was a witness to political conspiracies typical of the French court. On the death of the monarch, she took over the regency on behalf of her son, the future Louis XIV. When her son came of age in 1651, Anne of Austria’s political power faded into the background, but the queen, always surrounded by Spanish priests and religious, maintained close ties with Spain, especially with her father, Philip III. On her death, her considerable estate was inherited by her granddaughter, the future Queen consort of Spain, Maria Luisa of Orleans. The documentary shows in detail numerous events in his biography, such as his conflicts with Richelieu and his marriage strategies in favour of his son.

The post Women in history: Anne of Austria first appeared on History Lab.
