It depicts, in the vicinity of the chapel of the patron saint of Madrid, on the banks of the Manzanares, the day of his feast, 15 May. Numerous groups of majos and majas enjoy themselves singing, eating and strolling along the banks of the river. The concept of urban landscape differs from that of Goya, who intended a general view of Madrid in the background and the meadow in the foreground, with all the hustle and bustle of the town on the feast day. Castillo resorted to a generic landscape, with garden trees and few groups of figures, although the silhouette of the Toledo Bridge can be seen in the background.

The post San Isidro Meadow first appeared on History Lab.
