The work recreates the popular game of the little blind hen depicted by Goya in one of his most famous compositions

A group of nine figures, dressed as majos, along with a lady and a gentleman in elegant French-style dress, play blind man’s buffalo, which was originally known as the game of the ladle. In the centre of the circle, one of the blindfolded young men tries to catch his companions with this utensil. In the cardboard, Goya decided to conceal the figure of the young woman who appeared in the sketch, hidden behind the lady in the elegant hat, although her face is still visible, with her eyes and hair clearly visible. The background of the landscape recreates the banks of the Manzanares River as it passes through Madrid and the recognisable distances of the Guadarrama mountain range.

The post The blind hen first appeared on History Lab.
