]]> Edmonds is one of the few known nineteenth-century American painters who pursued dual careers in art and business, thus becoming an influential figure in the interrelated spheres of banking, politics and culture in New York. He was a regular contributor to exhibitions at the National Academy of Design and also made a name for himself for folk genre scenes inspired by the 17th century Dutch tradition. This scene depicts a seasonal activity on a mid-19th century American farm in which two white men pluck turkeys for the Christmas feast, unperturbed by the winter cold while a younger black figure stands between them and warms their hands.
