In the course of the 15th century, Portugal and Castile were at the forefront of overseas expansion along the Atlantic coast of Africa. Progress in cartography, navigational instruments and shipbuilding made it possible to sail the Atlantic. The dispute between Portugal and Castile was settled in 1494 with the signing of the Treaty of Tordesillas, which established a dividing line 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands. Columbus’ first expedition left Cabo de Palos in August, arriving on 12 October 1492 at an island in the Caribbean, later called San Salvador. At the same time, Columbus discovered the island of Cuba and, later, the island of Santo Domingo, which was called Hispaniola. Columbus made three voyages, and it was during the third (1498) that they reached the mainland.

The post Instruction to Columbus: Voyage and good government in the Indies first appeared on History Lab.

Chapter 5 of the BBC's History of the World series

The documentary series The History of the World, “History as adventure, as drama, as destiny”, produced by the British channel BBC, shows with great realism some of the key events in world history, such as the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America, the atomic bomb or the death of Julius Caesar. Special attention has been paid to details such as clothing, city settings, etc. Specifically, chapter 5 deals with the conquest of the New World. Without doubt, the contact between the Spanish colonists and the natives of America and the repercussions of the gold plundering are depicted. Thus was born the extensive network of sea routes by which the English and Dutch controlled the world’s maritime trade in spices, furs and luxury goods such as tulips. Meanwhile, Europe was in the midst of terrible religious conflicts after the Protestant Reformation.

The post Conquest and plunder first appeared on History Lab.

30-minute video on the Black Legend of the Empire. The 12th of October, the day Christopher Columbus set foot in the New World, is Spain’s National Day. It is the official national day. However, it is not merely a regional celebration, but a remembrance of the encounter between two different worlds, which is why it is a Universal day. It is not only a day of celebration in Spain, but also in America. From 12 October 1492 onwards, the social and political configuration of the world was transformed forever. Nowadays, there is fierce ideological opposition expressed mainly with the resounding sentence “nothing to celebrate” in reference to 12 October. Eduardo Galeano is frequently quoted to give a literary patina to the black-legendary ideological message. It is also common to come across the term “genocide” to describe Spain’s relationship with America. The spread of this perspective is so widespread and so vehemently stated that it seems to have become a majority opinion. But is this perception accurate, does it correspond to the Spanish imperial reality, was there plundering and destruction of the indigenous people, was there miscegenation and a civilising action worthy of celebration?

The post Against the Black Legend in America first appeared on History Lab.

This website provides a wealth of material concerning the conception of the World through Cosmography and Geography. Numerous maps and cartographic materials provide a historical overview of the evolution of the discipline, which reached its peak during the Renaissance period. Likewise, we find a large number of authors of different nationalities, with works that explore a great diversity of territories, ranging from a global perspective to the most regional level. Thus, we can find atlases that deal with the extent of the seas and oceans, maps that circumscribe a particular region, world maps or sea charts belonging to a voyage of exploration. Access to the materials is fast and versatile, and the illustrations are presented with a high quality of both image and detail.

The post Pleyades Virtual Library first appeared on History Lab.
