Web portal about the Cadastre of Ensenada in the Portal de Archivos Españoles. Along with a presentation on the purpose of the Cadastre, it includes interesting information such as a copy of the Royal Decree, the cadastral documents, the territorial division and a biography of the Marquis of Ensenada. In addition, there is a transcription of the general responses and a search engine for localities, from which you can access digitised copies of the responses of all the municipalities of the Crown of Castile (except the Canary Islands, Basque Provinces and the Foral Kingdom of Navarre).

The post Cadastre of Ensenada first appeared on History Lab.

Didactica 2.0 Museos en Femenino is the result of joint work between a team from the Instituto de Investigaciones Feministas of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the Asociación e-Mujeres and the teams from the museums participating in the project: Museo del Prado, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Museo del Traje and Museo Nacional de Cerámica González Martí. The project focuses on women in art and aims to develop joint actions in the field of museums to disseminate and facilitate knowledge of the cultural heritage held in them and promote their integration. On the website, each of the participating museums offers detailed and precise itineraries, as well as access to the corresponding teaching guides. These guides are extremely useful for both students and teachers. It is therefore a very useful tool for dissemination and teaching to guide the analysis of art and history from a gender perspective. For the period of the Modern Age, the proposals that best fit its chronology are those of the Museo del Prado and, in part, those of the Museo Nacional de Cerámica González Martí and the Museo del Traje.

The post Didactics 2.0 Museums in women’s terms first appeared on History Lab.

The Gallery of Art website allows online consultation of a large number of works of art of different styles and historical periods

The post Gallery of Art first appeared on History Lab.

The Web Gallery of Art is a project that is not related to any museum or art institution, and is not financially supported by corporate sponsors. However, it does have the support and advice of professionals in the discipline. The website is a virtual museum and searchable database of European fine art covering a chronology spanning a time span from the 3rd to the 19th centuries. This initiative was launched in 1996 as a Renaissance art news site with the intention of presenting this art in the most complete way possible. Gradually, the website began to incorporate, on the one hand, Paleochristian and pre-Romanesque art, and, on the other hand, it began to include works belonging to the Baroque period, and recently it has included 19th century art. The layout of the website shows different sections of the decorative and architectural arts that enhance the user experience with guided tours that help to understand the artistic and historical relationship between different works and artists. At the same time, the collection responds to the need of visitors to find a site where they can access diverse information on Art and History together with the corresponding pictorial illustrations. It is thus a searchable database complemented by a glossary containing articles on artistic terms, relevant historical events, important figures, cities and museums. Ultimately, the Web Gallery of Art is intended to be a free resource and educational tool in art history primarily for students and professionals in the academic world.

The post Gallery of Art first appeared on History Lab.

Once the period of the War of Succession was over, with the destruction and loss of documents caused, the new political power announced the creation of the Royal Library. The Eeal library became the current National Library and its origin was surrounded by many intricacies. It was an initiative that clashed with Philip V’s profile as a monarch, who was more inclined to play cards than to read books. The idea had deeper and more complex roots. It was in fact an initiative of Philip V’s confessors, one of the many royalist measures that were being introduced with the new political power. For Jesús Pradells Nadal, the concentration of works in the hands of the political power responded to a need to control publications and also to make it easier to justify the new political power. Works (books, coins, manuscripts, etc.) were acquired both through the purchase of the collections of members of the nobility and the intellectual elite and through confiscations. In 1716, Philip V issued a decree establishing the new library. The decree of 2 June 1716 also established the number of employees and the allocation of their salaries

The post Power, honour and elites in the 18th century first appeared on History Lab.

In this text dated 1641, Antonio López de Vega defends the censorship of the theatre for presenting a whole series of problems linked to its style. Guillermo Carnero explains the Spanish poet’s motivations, basing them on his rejection of the mixture of the comic and the tragic, as well as the multiplicity of plots lacking a logical unity. In the same way, it is a space in which characters of such high social value as kings are ridiculed, while others of low social standing are exalted. On the other hand, he was repulsed by gestural exaggerations and the use of verisimilitude as opposed to truth. Lope de Vega’s statements would constitute a precedent and would be followed in time by those who would advocate the censorship of the theatre.

The post Criticism of the theatre by Antonio López de Vega first appeared on History Lab.
