Web portal about the Cadastre of Ensenada in the Portal de Archivos Españoles. Along with a presentation on the purpose of the Cadastre, it includes interesting information such as a copy of the Royal Decree, the cadastral documents, the territorial division and a biography of the Marquis of Ensenada. In addition, there is a transcription of the general responses and a search engine for localities, from which you can access digitised copies of the responses of all the municipalities of the Crown of Castile (except the Canary Islands, Basque Provinces and the Foral Kingdom of Navarre).

The post Cadastre of Ensenada first appeared on History Lab.

Fragment of text in which Bartolomé Clvero points out the tensions existing between the monarchy and the nobility when the former has a reformist spirit

Clavero’s words are framed between the second half of the 18th century and the 19th century. At this time, the enlightened and reformers proposed changes aimed at modernising the country, a claim that was not always in line with the interests of other social groups, in this case the nobility. The struggle against these institutions, which according to the Enlightenment had hindered economic progress, took place as these reforms found some support in political power. Little by little, legislation would attempt to intervene in this type of feudal regimes in order to obtain greater tax revenues as well as greater political intervention. The bourgeoisie sought with this type of reform to consolidate political power on a territorial level, for which the power of the lords was an obstacle. At the same time, they wanted to establish a capitalist economy, which required the abolition of this feudal institution. For the monarchy, the interest lay in meeting the increase in state expenditure, which, according to Francisco Javier Guillamon Alvarez, had become burdensome since the end of the 18th century.

The post Mayorazgo.

Max Weber’s “The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism” was a work that presented an interesting association between the emergence of capitalism and certain behaviours derived from the Protestant religion. Since the Lutheran and Calvinist reforms, there was an attempt to return to a biblical basis by emphasising certain aspects relating to the honour of the worker/saviour. The Calvinist confession insisted that God’s approval of the individual depended on his or her business fortune, which created a need for the faithful to improve their economic situation. The emergence of Amsterdam in the 17th century and London in the 18th century as the economic capitals of the world gradually shifted the world’s economic strength to the northern Protestant axis. Such analogies convinced Max Weber that Protestantism had been the prelude to capitalism.

The post An Essay on the Economics Effects of the Reformation first appeared on History Lab.

The Contracting House, established in the Reales Alcázares in Seville in 1503, was the first administrative body created specifically for the management of America. In 1717, it was moved to Cadiz until its extinction in 1790. This institution organised, managed and processed expeditions to America, as well as controlling commercial activities and the transit of people. Although there were other Casas de Contratación in the Peninsula, the one in Seville had a monopoly on trade between Spain and its American territories; this required collaboration with the merchants’ guild and the determination of the port of Seville, which became the only one authorised for such activities.

The post Contracting House of Seville (1503-1790) first appeared on History Lab.
