The HistoTube blog is the first portal of history and heritage videos in Catalan. Its aim is to provide teachers and students interested in history with a series of titles that deal with different topics, whether political, social, cultural, economic or religious, covering different historical periods. It is an open, non-profit project, where its promoters encourage collaboration from other history experts, since the audiovisual materials are incorporated from other links on the web. The work presented here follows a documentary format on the arrival in Mataró of Queen Isabella Christina of Brunswick and her husband, Archduke Charles III, in the context of the War of the Spanish Succession that pitted the House of Habsburg against the Bourbons.

The post War of the Spanish Succession: The entry of the Habsburgs through Mataró first appeared on History Lab.

Programme dedicated to Anne of Austria (1601-1666). Daughter of Philip III, she became Queen of France alongside King Louis XIII. She was a witness to political conspiracies typical of the French court. On the death of the monarch, she took over the regency on behalf of her son, the future Louis XIV. When her son came of age in 1651, Anne of Austria’s political power faded into the background, but the queen, always surrounded by Spanish priests and religious, maintained close ties with Spain, especially with her father, Philip III. On her death, her considerable estate was inherited by her granddaughter, the future Queen consort of Spain, Maria Luisa of Orleans. The documentary shows in detail numerous events in his biography, such as his conflicts with Richelieu and his marriage strategies in favour of his son.

The post Women in history: Anne of Austria first appeared on History Lab.

In the repository Pasajes de la Historia we can find a compilation of all the podcasts of the Pasajes de la Historia section of the programme la Rosa de los Vientos (Onda Cero) narrated by Juan Antonio Cebrián, where you can listen to brief descriptions and discussions on historical topics of different kinds. In this case, he talks about the outstanding role played by the Dominican friar Fray Bartolomé de las Casas as an indoctrinator of the indigenous peoples. Biographical data and key moments in his life are also provided, not without accompanying the narration with historical notes on the conquest of the New World.

The post Fray Bartolomé de las Casas first appeared on History Lab.

The European colonisers trafficked millions of slaves captured mainly in Africa in order to use them as labour for numerous activities. Thus, thousands and thousands of people were transported to various regions of the planet, as we know well in the case of the American continent. This 3D reconstruction details with great precision each compartment and operation of the 18th century slave ship called L’Aurore. This resource is available in the “Transatlantic Slave Trade Database”, which contains an immense amount of information on the development of slavery from the 16th century to the end of the 19th century. It is a project supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities (United States) and is the result of the efforts of scholars from different institutions, including historians, cartographers, and slave trade specialists and researchers.

The post 3D video of a slave ship first appeared on History Lab.
