]]> The movement of people from one place to another in modern times required places to stay, in this case inns. In the ancien régime, inns were a widespread phenomenon in cities and towns, given that travelling with the means of the time was often lengthy and required stays away from home. This phenomenon of inns in cities such as Valladolid acquired great importance. The social profile that most frequented these places was undoubtedly that of the students, who, obliged to travel in order to complete their studies, settled in these places where they would spend the rest of their lives until they finished their degrees. To this end, the universities granted licences and established rigorous contracts in which they made sure that the student complied with what was established and did not cause disorder in the inn (in which case the licence was rescinded). The legislation of the Spanish kings on accommodation in these inns was numerous in order to prevent them from becoming hotbeds of conflict in the town
