Although Gonzalez Coques’s work wishes to convey an atmosphere of informality, the author’s idea is more to suggest the role of each member of the family. The eldest son, who will inherit the title, plays at being a knight with a battle rocon and feathered hat. The eldest daughter attends to her sister in a group. On the other hand, the father opposes the view of the garden and the mother sits with her children inside the living space. The effect is made more pronounced by the painting’s remarkable perspective, which requires the viewer’s eye to be positioned close to the work at its right edge. The rest of the family is depicted in a surprisingly oblique perspective. It should be added that the family enjoys a considered position as the space in which they are depicted has various classical attributions that reveal the degree of sophistication acquired and the knowledge of the sitters.

The post The family of Jan-Baptista Anthoine first appeared on History Lab.
