Philip III’s words about Alicante

According to María Asunción Rogles Hernández, the city of Alicante gradually became a city of reference in Mediterranean trade from the mid-17th and 18th centuries onwards. In addition, it was characterised by a powerful agricultural sector which was also commercialised, taking advantage of the city’s privileged location in the Mediterranean context. Added to this was the ease with which the city of Alicante could communicate with Castile and the interior, something that was achieved by roads that did not have major orographic obstacles. This led Philip III to reaffirm its importance in the Valencian Cortes held in 1601. His words can be placed in the context prior to the Moorish expulsion, where a possible invasion from Istanbul or Algiers continued to be a cause for concern

The royal patronage was the way the monarchs chose the ecclesiastical personnel. The division between the temporal and spiritual concepts is fundamental to understanding the procedure of royal patronage. The kings would try to assert the temporal sphere, which was theirs, as opposed to the spiritual, which belonged to the pope. The tendency to reaffirm royal patronage was promoted by the Catholic Monarchs, continued by the Habsburgs and strengthened with the arrival of the Bourbons. Through royal patronage, the monarch proposed ecclesiastical personnel to the pope, but it was the pope who had to give his approval (normally the pope agreed to the king’s proposals). Thanks to the royal patronage, the monarchs were able to articulate personnel attached to the state, often making these religious almost functionaries of the king, something which obviously generated suspicion in the ranks of the ecclesiastics who saw it as intrusiveness.

Royal Provision of Felipe III at the request of the Concejo de la Mesta, addressed to Francisco de Talavera, from Lorca, for ploughing on the land where the watering place was located, making himself the owner of it and not allowing any livestock to enter.
