Giulio Alberoni was an Italian cardinal, chief advisor to King Philip V of Spain, who arrived in Spain in 1711, where he developed a political career that ended in 1719 following an expulsion order by King Philip V. In the court context, Alberoni promoted a policy of economic and social reform. His actions, framed after the War of the Spanish Succession, sought to reduce the powers of the Grandes de España, abolished internal customs within the Crown (except for Navarre and the Basque provinces), stimulated trade with America by transferring the Casa de Contratación to Cadiz.

The post Letter signed by Cardinal Alberoni, to the Marquis of Villena, regretting his banishment from Court first appeared on History Lab.

The War of Succession pitted Philip of Bourbon against Archduke Charles. Philip of Bourbon, faced with the refusal of the councillors of Aragon to eliminate their charters, decreed the suppression of the Council of Aragon. The Council had jurisdiction over the territories belonging to the Crown: Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, Majorca and Sardinia, and its task was to control the fueros and jurisprudence. The aim of the Felipist faction was to centralise the institutions in the Council and Chamber of Castile. Along these lines, he also contributed the Nueva Planta Decrees, which abolished the laws, institutions and privileges of the Crown of Aragon in order to bring them into line with those of Castile.

The post Philip VI decrees the suppression of the Council of Aragon in 1707 first appeared on History Lab.

It contains a representation of Archduke Charles leading the embarkation of troops in an episode of the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714). Below, an angel holds the coats of arms of Spain and Portugal. In the lower left-hand corner are the graphic scales in Hispanic, Portuguese, French and Italic German miles. The author has outlined the mountain systems, the most important rivers and cities (represented by groupings of buildings), as well as the communications network and a division of the territory into kingdoms.

Once the conquest of Granada was over, the Catholic Monarchs took measures to protect the north of Spain in the face of a possible confrontation with the French troops, and this work was discontinued until the reign of Philip V in the 18th century. From Philip II onwards, major changes were introduced in the corps of engineers who would work for the crown, with technical training being promoted at the Academy of Mathematics in Madrid and not depending almost exclusively on importing these figures from abroad.
In July 1725, the engineer Jorge Próspero de Verboom arrived in Pamplona to work on the fortification of enclaves such as San Sebastián, Fuenterrabía and Pamplona. One of his most striking actions were his corrections to the engineer Luis de Langot in Fuenterrabía, introducing a whole system of outer forts and redoubts in strategic places, transforming Langot’s proposals to such an extent that it could practically be considered an independent project that would transform the square forever.
In this case, the importance of the enclave can already be seen graphically during the reign of Charles V, a time when some fortresses in the north of the peninsula such as San Sebastián and other coastal cities such as Mallorca or Cádiz continued to be reinforced. The post-medieval wall of Fuenterrabía would be attached to an interior defensive tower, it sat on a hill 250 metres in diameter and with the Bidasoa River covering its western part, it was in a strategically fundamental place.

The post The fortifications of Fuenterrabia around 1535 first appeared on History Lab.

Van Loo depicted the family of Philip V, the new dynasty in 18th century Spain, in this huge canvas

Van Loo’s work shows King Philip V with his second wife, Isabella Farnese, who appears in the centre of the composition. Alongside them are his descendants, the future Ferdinand VI (son of his first marriage to Maria Luisa Gabriela of Savoy) and Charles III, accompanied by their wives. Contrasting attitudes can be observed: the exhaustion of Philip V compared to the fullness of Isabella Farnese, the elegance of Fernando VI and the presence of the then King of Naples, Charless III. The work as a whole excludes the psychological depth of the sitters. In addition to its genealogical value, the work is reminiscent of the organisation of Dutch conversation paintings in which the family is shown as a public institution. From an artistic point of view, it marks the evolution of the French school with the apotheosis of the collective portrait and a more developed conception than the earlier paintings by Rigaud, Mignard and Largillerre.

The post The family of Philip V first appeared on History Lab.
