The Provincial Archive of Almería contains an excellent collection of maps and cartographic documentation. In this case, we are looking at a map of the city of Almería drawn by the Marquis of Canales (1709). In it we can perfectly appreciate elements such as the city wall, the Alcazaba, the network of narrow streets and, curiously, a fortress is drawn, with artillery, which must have disappeared at the end of the War of the Spanish Succession.

The post Plan of the city of Almeria in 1709 first appeared on History Lab.

This website provides a wealth of material concerning the conception of the World through Cosmography and Geography. Numerous maps and cartographic materials provide a historical overview of the evolution of the discipline, which reached its peak during the Renaissance period. Likewise, we find a large number of authors of different nationalities, with works that explore a great diversity of territories, ranging from a global perspective to the most regional level. Thus, we can find atlases that deal with the extent of the seas and oceans, maps that circumscribe a particular region, world maps or sea charts belonging to a voyage of exploration. Access to the materials is fast and versatile, and the illustrations are presented with a high quality of both image and detail.

The post Pleyades Virtual Library first appeared on History Lab.

Interactive World Historical Atlas

The post GeaCron first appeared on History Lab.

GeaCron is a geographic information application implemented from a vector database. The information it provides can be used both in the field of historical research and in all educational fields. GeaCron’s mission is to make historical information universally accessible to all, through intuitive and attractive geo-temporal maps and configurable timelines. It provides a system for representing historical events and geopolitical maps of any region of the world and for any historical period. Raster images or vector files such as KML or shapefiles can be generated. This design allows GeaCron to be interactive, accurate, configurable, flexible, scalable and facilitates the augmentation of historical information. The maps show the historical situation of the world at the beginning of each year. GeaCron is also intended to be an enabler for websites that have historical content, such as online encyclopaedias, digital journalism or other geography and history websites.

The post GeaCron first appeared on History Lab.
