The shortage of basic foodstuffs, including bread, and the speculation of hoarders were two of the reasons that led the lower social classes to riot against the rulers. In the case of the Motín de Esquilache, the revolt ended with the march, via Cartagena, of the Marquis, who had to leave the peninsula in the face of the events and the demands of the lower social classes.

]]> The 18th century was marked by numerous social conflicts, with the Esquilache riot being the most important revolt. All the revolts were social, economic and political in nature. The shortage of basic foodstuffs, including bread, and speculation by hoarders were two of the reasons that led the lower social classes to riot against the rulers. In this case, the machinada of 1718, caused by Philip V’s order to place customs on the coast, led to a rise in the price of products entering by sea.

]]> Throughout the Modern Age, agriculture was one of the main sectors of the economy. Especially from the 16th century onwards, it experienced significant growth as a result of the increase in population. Agricultural expansion was evident both in the increase in cereal land and in the prosperity of vineyards. After the 17th century, which saw a certain economic decline in various areas, the 18th century saw a resumption of growth that was accompanied by a series of agricultural reforms, promoted by the Enlightenment, which sought to modernise the structures of land ownership and tenure and to increase agricultural production. The image shows a machine used for threshing crops, a process used to remove the grain from the straw on land where cereal crops were grown.
