After Napoleon Bonaparte seized power in 1799, the Spanish court proved to be a weak extension of French policy. Charles IV’s latent weakness encouraged the French cause around the invasion of Portugal in 1801. A year later, France and England signed the Peace of Amiens, but their confrontation was soon to resume, and Spain became involved in this confrontation. The direct consequence of this situation was the Battle of Trafalgar (1805), where the Spanish fleet was destroyed by Admiral Nelson’s squadron. This defeat led to a further weakening of control of the overseas territories, which resulted in considerable economic collapse.

The post List of those killed and wounded on the Bahama in the Battle of Trafalgar first appeared on History Lab.

It contains four letters addressed by Mazarredo to Azanza: 1. On the transfer of Azanza from Cádiz to El Puerto [de Santa María], and considerations regarding the defence of Cádiz against the English (on board. 8 July 1797). It ends with two expressions written in Basque. 2. On the transport and itineraries of the ship “El Monarca”, whose departure for America was scheduled for the following 20 January, criticising the unclear instructions of the superior (Island, 27 December 1797). Attached is a copy of a letter from José Mazarredo to José Justo Salcedo [y Arauco], in command of the ship “El Monarca”, which in turn inserts another of “19 of the current” from D. Juan Lángara [Minister of the Navy] to Mazarredo (Cádiz. 25 December 1797). 3. On the evolution of the meteorological weather (Island. 17th in the afternoon [probably January 1798]). 4. Sends letter from Mr. Lángara [Minister of the Navy] to Azanza, enclosed, who is not to be found, and announces that his preparations have been approved by the superiority (Island. 18 in the evening [probably January 1798]).

The post Correspondence of Miguel José de Azanza with José de Mazarredo Salazar first appeared on History Lab.

From the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the Netherlands fought for independence from Spain in a long war, known as the Flanders War or the Eighty Years’ War. In 1590, the city of Breda, important for its strategic position to launch new offensives, was taken by the Dutch, and between 1609 and 1621 enjoyed a truce that expired when Philip IV ascended to the Spanish throne, who resumed the war and the clashes with the United Provinces of the North. To captain the expedition to Breda and lead the Flanders Thirds, the monarch appointed the Genoese aristocrat Ambrosio de Spinola, who would be in charge of fighting the Dutch with 40,000 men. Breda, which was defended by Justin de Nassau of the House of Orange, was besieged in 1625 so that it could not receive supplies and ammunition. The troops garrisoning the city finally surrendered on 5 June 1625, with the Spanish generals decreeing that the defeated were to be treated with respect and dignity. This treatment is depicted in the play, where it can be seen how the enemy is treated with chivalry. In the foreground we see how the victorious general receives, almost affectionately, the key from the defeated enemy.

The post The Spears or the Surrender of Breda (1625) first appeared on History Lab.

Radio documentary in which prestigious historians analyse the complex personality and reign of Philip II, his Empire and the difficulties in managing it, as well as his determination to defend the Catholic religion. It highlights his facet as a Renaissance prince who built El Escorial and treasured fourteen thousand volumes in his library; as an art collector (Bosch, Titian, Flemish painters, etc.) or as a promoter of town planning and fortifications in America, in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Panama, for example. It deals with his image distorted by the Black Legend as a fanatic king and defender of the Inquisition, which was propagated by his enemies in England and the Netherlands. Apart from self-interested manipulations, the video also analyses the dark points of his reign, from the death of his son, the infant Charles, to the long and continuous wars he waged as a champion of Catholicism. Wars against England, the Netherlands and the Turks left the country exhausted and on the verge of ruin with several bankruptcies. In Documentos RNE, Modesta Cruz tackles the controversial figure of Philip II through leading specialists such as the professors of Modern History at the Complutense University of Madrid, Enrique Martínez and Fernando Bouza. Also featured are commentaries by Geoffrey Parker and John Elliot, and the late Manuel Fernández Álvarez and Joseph Pérez, great connoisseurs of the period of Philip II.

The post Philip II, Renaissance prince and champion of the Catholic faith first appeared on History Lab.
