The first of the Holy League’s objectives (1571) was to recruit a navy of galleys to confront the Turkish navy. In the end, 206 galleys and 6 galleys (large, heavily armed galleys) under the command of Juan de Austria, Luis de Requesens, Álvaro de Bazán, Gianandrea Doria, Agostino Barbarigo and Marcantonio Colonna were ordered. On 7 October 1571 they were confronted by just over 300 Turkish ships off the coast of Naupactos in the Gulf of Patras. The League’s superiority was due to its cannon (the Turks much preferred to sweep the decks with arrows) and the quality of the Spanish infantry on board. The battle was nothing more than a battle of infantry on ships: the League fought in three blocks: one along the coast, with Venetian galleys commanded by Agostino Barbarigo; one in the centre, commanded directly by John of Austria and Marcantonio Colonna; and one towards the open sea, under the command of Gianandrea Doria. The reserve was commanded by Álvaro de Bazán. In the central clash the Turkish admiralty ship, the Sultana, almost took the League’s admiral, the Royal, but the help of Marcantonio Colonna’s galleys reversed the situation and the Turkish admiralty was taken, annihilating all its crew, including Admiral Ali Paschá.By the end of the day the League had sunk 50 ships, taken about 140, taken 10,000 Turkish prisoners and freed the Turkish prisoners.despite the resounding victory (“the highest occasion that the past centuries have seen, the present nor the future centuries hope to see”, in the words of Miguel de Cervantes – who fought on the galley Marquesa – in the prologue to his Don Quixote) neither the League nor Spain nor Venice knew how to profit from it. Two years later the Turkish navy had completely recovered and Venice ceded Cyprus to the Ottoman Empire.

The post Plan of the order of battle of the armies at the Battle of Lepanto first appeared on History Lab.

The War of the Communities of Castile, or the Revolt of the Comuneros, took place during the reign of Charles I, between 1520 and 1522. It was an armed uprising led by the so-called “comuneros” from the inland cities of Castile, with Toledo and Valladolid at the head of the uprising. This uprising has been interpreted in different ways, as an anti-seigneurial revolt, as one of the first bourgeois revolutions, or even as an anti-fiscal movement. It was motivated by the political instability present in the Crown of Castile from the beginning of the 16th century. The arrival of Charles I in Castile around 1517, barely knowing how to speak Castilian and bringing with him a large number of Flemish nobles and clerics as his court, provoked misgivings among the Castilian elites, who felt a certain displacement and feared the loss of their power and status. This discontent was transmitted to the popular strata. This was compounded by tax demands that provoked a series of urban revolts. After a year of rebellion, the communist leaders Padilla, Bravo and Maldonado were beheaded in 1521, and the communist army fell into disarray. Toledo maintained its rebellion until 1522. In some territories such as Andalusia, for example, the uprising had little impact, as the cities were dominated by the nobility and remained loyal to the king. Only Jaén, Baeza and Úbeda supported the rebellion until 1521. The image is a photograph of the work by Antonio Gisbert Pérez, “Ejecución de los Comuneros de Castilla” (“Execution of the Comuneros de Castilla”), kept in the Palacio de las Cortes in Madrid, which was photographed by Juan Laurent y Minier in 1871 for the National Exhibition of that year. It depicts the execution of the Comuneros Juan de Padilla, Juan Bravo and Francisco Maldonado on 24 April 1521 at Villalar.

The post Revolt of the Comuneros of Castile first appeared on History Lab.

Imperial Glory places the player in the mid-18th century in the lead-up to the French Revolution, providing the tools and historical keys to strengthening an empire during the early stages of the game, and then resolving it by confronting the other colonial powers in a race for expansion in the more than fifty royal enclaves in Europe and Africa. To more accurately recreate the game’s mapping, Pyro Studios has created an actual provincial map for each of the game’s territories, showing characteristic elements such as the palace of Potsdam or the barren fields of Castile.
It is essential to understand and apply real war tactics, in which height on the battlefield, the search for natural and artificial cover and the creation of specific formations against the enemy army distribution must be mastered. In addition to this, the game seeks to represent as truthfully as possible the transition between 18th and 19th century tactics, with cavalry and artillery gaining importance to the detriment of a potentially more numerous but volatile infantry. Finally, one of the most interesting game modes is that of “historical battles”, focused on military history enthusiasts and based on historical documentation to show as realistically as possible such battles as Waterloo or Arapiles.

The post Imperial Glory first appeared on History Lab.
