The Dutch painter van Brekelenkam executed various genre paintings. An example of this is the present work, which depicts the small establishment of an elderly woman selling fish from her stall. A young woman who is counting the money she has to pay the woman for having cut the fish into the desired shape buys the products. The action has already taken place, as we see the salmon in the buyer’s basket while the seller waits patiently with her knife for the stipulated amount to be paid. The establishment is a small wooden structure covered with a cloth and equipped with the basic tools needed to carry out the work: the knife for cutting and the scales for weighing. In the background is a young man, possibly a son helping in the family work or an apprentice.

The post The fishwife first appeared on History Lab.
