]]> The cotilla was a piece of underwear that is the predecessor to the corsets of the 19th century. This garment originated in 18th century France through the stylistic impulse it exerted as a European power during the Enlightenment. As a whole, it is a piece of underwear that enhanced the curves of the female silhouette, until then constricted and hidden, which adjusts the waist and oppresses the torso from the chest to the waist, closing at the back by means of a system of laces that fits like a second skin. The pressure exerted by this garment made it difficult to breathe properly and limited the ability to move, so it was only worn by women who did not do any physical work. Its fastening system prevented women from being able to dress themselves, so they needed a second person to adjust the laces and fasten the back of the garment.
