]]> In this 15-minute educational video produced by Academia Play, the Visual Thinking technique is used to explain the importance of the Spanish Inquisition or Tribunal of the Holy Office created in 1478 by the Catholic Monarchs. The video focuses on disproving misinformation through a series of contrasted references about the origin, purpose and way of acting. The description of the video states: “In this video we are going to talk about the Inquisition, and above all we are going to focus on the Spanish Inquisition. When we hear the word inquisition we immediately think of death, torture, fanaticism, intolerance, control and fear…. These characteristics undoubtedly existed and that is why this phenomenon has tended to be explained from a somewhat sensationalist and often distorted point of view. In this video we are going to refute a series of commonly accepted clichés, most of the time due to the bombardment of erroneous information. At the end of the video we will include a small bibliography for those who want to approach this subject from a rigorous approach. We have been advised by Don César Cervera Moreno”.

]]> After the expulsion of the Jews from the peninsula, strict mechanisms of repression were established against any hint of the presence of this religion. For this control, the Inquisition was entrusted with the task. In this case, the inquisitor Digo Rodríguez Lucero led 107 people accused of being Judaisers to the stake. He was characterised by his ferocious persecution of these new Christians, and it is even claimed that he allowed a real Judaiser to instruct the accused in the prisons so that he could later accuse them. His ways and means of proceeding led Pedro Mártir de Anglería to emphasise his dark and demonically inspired character. The unpopularity of his actions led the city of Cordoba to request his expulsion. However, none of the bodies to which they appealed shared this view. Nevertheless, in 1506 the city took up arms against him, storming the inquisitorial prison while Lucero fled the city.

]]> Transcription of the will and codicils of Don Baltasar Rodrigo de Balboa Calvillo, a member of the power elite of Huéscar (Granada), made in 1647. Lord of the villas of Cotillas and Casablanca, he was also the High Constable of the said town and a major constable of the Inquisition. From 1635 he headed the entailed estate founded by Rodrigo de Balboa, his fourth grandfather. The text refers to the lawsuit he was involved in over the Cotillas entailed estate. There are indications of a financial nature, especially referring to deeds of obligation and debts contracted. In this sense, the debts he has with his servants and for the value of 2620 masses stand out. There may be a possible case of bastardy. He justifies that a boy and a girl whose upbringing he assumed in Hellín and Murcia are not his children. The two marriages he contracted are specified, alluding to the value of the dowries, the arras and other commitments. He leaves as his heir his only daughter Doña Elvira de Balboa, as well as another possible son or daughter he might have with his second and current wife Doña Pascuala de Villanueva if she were pregnant at the time of his death. He also encloses a codicil in which he states that the post of major constable of the Inquisition, which he holds “for three lives”, should pass to his brother-in-law Don Juan García de Villanueva, his wife’s brother. And for the “third life” of the post he appoints the person his wife designates. Finally, in the codicil he makes some clarifications and additions, especially in relation to the debts contracted with his servants and other bequests made to them.
