]]> The depiction of children’s leisure was one of the favourite themes of the French naturalist Chardin was strongly inspired by the 17th-century Dutch tradition in this composition. While it is not certain that he intended the image to convey a message, the soap bubbles were understood to allude to the transience of life. Chardin painted successful compositions in multiple later versions such as the one in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
