The role of Jewish women and men in European societies has undergone profound changes over the last two centuries. Their gradual equality of rights with non-Jews—in addition to the process of secularization and assimilation, anti-Semitism, and internal reforms of Judaism—had a different impact on women and men, and transformed Jewish representations of femininity and masculinity. The renewed value ascribed to women as “guardians of tradition” during the nineteenth century was a change that paradoxically enabled them to take on new roles as educators, leaders of Jewish organizations, and sometimes as officers. A major revolution came with their access to secular education, which was particularly early, and also to religious education somewhat later. The profound reorganization of Jewish collective institutions after the Holocaust led to renewed religious polarization opposing the “Orthodox,” who were often in the majority, and “liberals” with respect to women’s participation in the synagogue and the study of religious texts.

The post Gender and profound changes in European Judaism first appeared on History Lab.

During the 1930s and 40s, the Nazis and their collaborators murdered six million Jews. Hitler’s intention was to destroy all Jewish communities, and to build a ‘master race’ of Aryans. Many other ‘non-aryans’ were persecuted including Romanies, homosexuals, and the disabled, as well as those who were politically opposed to the Nazis. This terrible moment in history is now known as the Holocaust. It remains one of the most horrific examples in recent European history of indifference, inhumanity, prejudice and genocide.

The post Voices of the Holocaust first appeared on History Lab.

Esther says the first time she remembers crying was when she cried about the Holocaust and it suddenly made sense why she and her family were the way they were – that her mother used to cry a lot and how they were all anxious. They both talk about coming to terms with their Jewish identity. Leah describes dropping the British name her parents gave her and taking on a Jewish one instead. Esther says that she found this weird at the time and how it was only when she went to Israel that she became aware of being Jewish and felt comfortable with it, that growing up in a small town in Devon she’d just wanted to be normal and her aunt and mother had embarrassed her with their Jewishness. Leah talks about how Israel has never held the same importance for her.

The post Conversation between aunt and niece, Leah and Esther, about their Jewish identity and how the Holocaust still looms large in their lives first appeared on History Lab.
