The documentary series The History of the World, “History as adventure, as drama, as destiny”, produced by the British channel BBC, shows with great realism some of the key events in world history, such as the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America, the atomic bomb or the death of Julius Caesar. Special attention has been paid to details such as clothing, city settings, etc. Specifically, chapter 5 deals with the conquest of the New World. Without doubt, the contact between the Spanish colonists and the natives of America and the repercussions of the gold plundering are depicted. Thus was born the extensive network of sea routes by which the English and Dutch controlled the world’s maritime trade in spices, furs and luxury goods such as tulips. Meanwhile, Europe was in the midst of terrible religious conflicts after the Protestant Reformation.

The post Conquest and plunder first appeared on History Lab.

Episode 12 of the documentary series “Memories of Spain”. The descriptor that appears on the rtve a la carte website contains the following summary: Charles of Gaunt, son of Joan the Mad and Philip the Fair of Austria, comes to the throne of Spain. Thus Charles I of Spain and V of Germany (1500-1558) entered history. Charles was the grandson on his mother’s side of the Catholic Monarchs and on his father’s side of Maximilian, Emperor of Austria. When he arrived in Spain, the Communards confronted him in Castile. But Charles consolidated his power. He defeats Francis I of France at Pavia and the Turkish Suleiman the Magnificent. In his time Luther carries out the Protestant Reformation. When Charles dies, his son Philip II inherits a great empire. Shots from the TVE programme Los comuneros by José A. Páramo are used. It has the advice of Ricardo García Cárcel and its duration is 51:29 minutes

The post Charles V, a monarch, an empire and a sword.
