The importance of this text lies in the fact that it represents from the primary source the importance given to the entailed estate. The entailed an estate was a group of goods that constituted the patrimony normally created by the nobility and accredited before a notary. It was an indivisible group that sought to maintain the lineage in perpetuity. It was normally assigned to the first-born male. However, the casuistry was extended and regulated in the Laws of Toro in 1505. Most of a nobleman’s property was normally integrated in the estate, but some could be reserved for the second-born of the family. Indeed, as it was indivisible, it passed entirely to the first-born, so that the younger siblings did not have such a guaranteed future as the first-born. For this reason, the nobility tried to place these second-born children in the church and other institutions in order to give them a stable future.

The post Some documents and private letters that belongs to the sencond duke of Gandía in Joan de Borja.

In the modern age, society was structured according to different organisational and mental parameters. There was a division of society along the lines of the estates, in which the ambition of all the social groups behind the privileged was to improve their social and economic situation. Under this premise, marriage constituted a gateway to improve the family situation. That is why love was not a determining element in the marriage of the spouses. In addition to the need for socio-economic advancement, there was the absolute power of the parents to approve the marriage. This fragment illustrates a frustrated love between a couple who are separated by the marital conveniences sought by their parents. In this case, José Sánchez’s father forces his son to marry a well-to-do woman against his will. Consequently, José Sánchez writes to his beloved informing her of the situation. This is evidence that rigid social mechanisms in modern times coerced men and women, putting them at the absolute disposal of the need to improve the family situation. In this case, by arranging marriages that would give the family a step up the social ladder.

The post Letter from José Sánchez to Gerónima first appeared on History Lab.

Marriage contracts between members of the power elite of Huéscar (Granada) in 1624. Dispensation of consanguinity is necessary due to the existence of kinship between the contracting parties. The conditions of the marriage are made explicit. Among them, the bride will contribute 5000 ducats, of which 3000 will be in trousseau, jewels and house plus the expenses of the dispensation, and the rest in money. The bridegroom will contribute the goods that his father D. Gabriel Carrasco Girón has and enjoys from the bond founded by Don Gabriel Carrasco and Andrés Carrasco, his father and grandfather, which are the house and farmhouse of the Raigadas with all its annexes and belongings and the main houses that he has in the city. In addition, he is granted a vineyard of 7000 vines. It is specified that his father cedes, renounces and transfers the usufruct and emolument of the entail and bond to the said Captain Andrés Carrasco Girón, his eldest son. He will also be the heir to another entailed estate held by his father and founded by Mayno de Cernúsculi, the latter’s grandfather.

The document presented is the baptismal register of Mariano de las Mercedes José Roca de Togores, better known as the Marquis of Molins. In the register, the priest of Chinchilla, Paulino Molino, receives authorisation from the priest of the church of San Juan Bautista in Albacete to perform the baptism of Mariano. In the record he records the importance of the baptism by mentioning the parents: Luis Roca de Togores y Rosel, Count of Pinohermoso, Lord of Benejuzar, born in Orihuela; and María Francisca de Paula Carrasco, Countess of Villarreal and Lady of Pozo Rubio. It also refers to both maternal and paternal grandparents, as well as the most important witnesses attending the ceremony. All this information was compiled in the Baptismal Books of the parishes, making it possible to establish genealogies and recreate the life trajectories of the individuals.

The post Baptism of the Marquis of Molins in 1812 first appeared on History Lab.

Parish registers are a fundamental source for establishing the life trajectories and genealogies of individuals. Baptism, marriage and death are key stages in the life cycle that are catalogued in the parish registers. In this case, the document refers to the death of Melchor de Macanaz, illustrious literary figure and public prosecutor of the Council of Castile during the reign of Philip V. Thanks to the register, we know that he died in the Albacete town of Hellín on 5 December 1760, the widower of María Maximiliana.

The post Death of Melchor de Macanaz in Hellín, 1760 first appeared on History Lab.
