How the Earth’s Temperature Rising Affects.

The IPCC or Intergovernmental Group for Climate Change, set up by the UN in 1988, is made up of scientists with expertise in various disciplines, all relating to climate. The commission draws up a report every five years on new experimental evidence relating to the increase in the earth’s temperature. The first reports were cautious, but in the last, published in 2014, the experts expressed themselves quite unequivocally: there are no longer any doubts founded on the fact that the temperature of the planet is rising and that the cause are some human activities such as transport, industry, electricity generation, agriculture and intensive farming.

The post Climate changes first appeared on History Lab.

Conference held at the Egyptian Museum entitled: “Slaves and servants from ancient Egypt to medieval Europe: a history of misunderstandings”. Since the birth of the first hierarchical and classed societies, the forms of exploitation of the work of others have been manifold. Yet some terms used to describe dependency relationships, such as “servant”, “slave” and “corvée”, have found wide applicability to very different and distant societies. In this conference a medievalist, Professor Giuseppe Sergi (professor of Medieval History at the University of Turin) and an Egyptologist, Doctor Federico Poole (Curator of the Egyptian Museum) face the challenge of measuring together differences and similarities between the societies from respectively studied, and the possibility of a common language to talk about social phenomena. At the same time, they deconstruct some clichés regarding the societies they study, for example regarding serfdom as the main form of enslavement in the Middle Ages, or the opposite clichés, one popular, the other academic, that slavery would have been predominant. or, conversely, substantially absent in Pharaonic Egypt.

The post From antiquity to the Middle Ages first appeared on History Lab.

In the 16th century, the slave trade decimated the African population, causing devastation and hardship, the signs of which still remain today. In the 21st, migrations from the Global South are a "voluntary" phenomenon-though a forced choice, for so many-but they bring to mind this sad and dark past. In both cases, there are people who profit from the exodus of these human beings.

Alberto Grohmann was Professor of Economic History at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Perugia from 1990 to 2011. He has edited numerous works, concentrating his scientific research on issues of economic and social history from the 11th to the 20th. century, with particular attention to the economic problems of medieval and modern Europe and to urban history. In his speech that we present here, he explores the history of the world economy from the 1990s, when the concept of globalization was affirmed, placing a comparison with the economic system of the Mediterranean area in the Middle Ages.

The post The dawn of globalization first appeared on History Lab.
