The author gives us the structure of the family in the province of León according to the Catastro de la Ensenada (1752-1754). By areas, the rural world, represented by the counties linked to agrarian models, the nuclear family was hegemonic, with values far higher than in the urban world. These values are attenuated in mountain areas for the nuclear model, in contrast with the growth of the solitary household, reaching levels of 22.7%. In the rest of the province, the number of single people was between 15% and 13%, with Cea-Campos standing out for its low number of single people: 6.7%. The extended household, made up of direct family additions to the nuclear household, was the third most widespread typology, but with more modest values. It stood out in the counties and villages with the lowest percentage of nuclear families; similarly, the multiple household, almost absent, had a greater impact in mountainous areas: Ancares (3.3%) and Montaña (6.4%), and was the protagonist of the rural elites as a compensatory family strategy in the distribution of inheritance.

The post Typology of the family in the province of León in the middle of the 18th century first appeared on History Lab.

The towns of Jorquera and Casas Ibáñez are located in La Manchuela albacetense. The former, on the banks of the Júcar, had its economic configuration around irrigated farming, while the latter focused on dry farming, mainly with the cultivation of cereals and saffron. In the mid 18th century, according to data from the Ensenada Cadastre, the heads of the family households were married (72.75% on average of the two towns). This meant that the rest were households headed by bachelors (9.35%) and widowers (17.79%) of both sexes. This resource analyses the composition of these households, which had an average size of 3.76 persons per residential unit in Jorquera, and 3.49 in Casas Ibáñez (excluding servants). These figures are slightly below the demographic context of neighbouring towns: Abengibre with 4.03; Alatoz with 4.09; and Alcalá del Júcar with 4.55. By household typology, the largest size is represented by 4+5 households (extended households and multiple households), followed by nuclear households (type 3), households without structure (2) and solitary households (1). The defining characteristics of the household types themselves set the trends in size, but not in their total number. The primacy of the nuclear household was total and in stark contrast to the solitary, extended and multiple households.

The post Size and composition of the household in the state of Jorquera (Albacete) according to its structure. 1753 first appeared on History Lab.

The different family models had regional and local variables. In the latter case, we find the examples of the municipalities of the current Valencian Community. By differentiating between urban and rural areas, we can see how solitary households were greater in the cities than in the countryside, and consequently, and inversely, complex households were more common in rural areas than in urban areas. The established confluence of the conjugal/nuclear family model meant that they dominated in both spheres with similar percentages. These data are reinforced when a semi-urban population, between the countryside and the city, such as Vinaròs, shows an intermediate trend in its results. Valencian families, as in the rest of Spain, were conditioned by the economic level and mentality of the localities. Wealth, property ownership, access to resources and the possibility of social advancement shaped the family model.

The post Family Structures in the Kingdom of Valencia, 18th-19th Centuries first appeared on History Lab.

The socio-professional group to which one belonged tended to determine the structure of the household. An example of this is the data provided by the Cadastre of the Marqués de la Ensenada for the study of the Sierra de Alcaraz (1753). By professions, farmers, tradesmen and, above all, the groups in the administration and liberal professions have a higher proportion of complex households than day labourers and wage earners. The county average is set by the crafts and trades sector. From these groups, women and farm and livestock labourers, together with the clergy, make up the majority of the solitary household figures. In the formation of the different family groups, numerous variables appear, such as material wealth, status, mentality, family and individual projection, all of which are reflected in the trades carried out by the heads of the family.

The post Household structure and socio-professional group in the Sierra de Alcaraz in 1753 first appeared on History Lab.

The structure of female-headed households in inland Spain reveals that the dominant family model was the nuclear one (consisting of parents and children), with 81% of the cases. Those living alone were the second largest group with 10.4% of cases. The rest of the family models did not reach 5%. Among the groups that stand out most, nuclear and solitary, we observe a tendency towards solitude from the residential point of view: the vast majority of widows who headed the household and who lived with their children accounted for 61.3% of the cases, a figure that will decrease as the children grow up and emancipate from the family group.

The post Structure of female-headed households in inland Spain in 1753 (%) first appeared on History Lab.
