]]> This painting traditionally known as “the world turned upside down”, Steen combined humorous stories with moralising statements. One example is this house of debauches: the inscription on the wall warns and regrets it. The scene inside the domestic interior has hardly any rationalised order to the figures, with the woman in the centre of the picture in a rather inebriated mood, holding various containers, presumably of alcohol, in her hands, and a dog eating on the table or a child smoking a pipe.
