Fragment of text in which enlisted bandits complain about having been deceived, as they enlisted to go to Naples when their destination seems to be Oran

The Spanish Monarchy had many armed conflicts for which the crown-led recruitment system proved ineffective. As we entered the 17th century, economic and demographic recession was compounded by difficulties in recruiting armies. From then on, there was a tendency to decentralise recruitment systems, and even bandits were enlisted as part of this dynamic. This satisfied the military demands of the crown, but also, for a time, reduced the conflicts that had previously been caused by these bandits. Enlisting in the army was at the same time an opportunity for exemption from punishment, which generated interest in some of these bandits. However, as they were men who enlisted of their own free will, they had a preference for the places they were assigned to. Normally, the Italian instances tended to be quiet and well paid. On the contrary, destinations like Oran were truly despised. Apart from being far away, the supplies and provisions of the garrisons in North Africa were very limited, and the constant prowling of the Algerian dey made it a very dangerous posting.

The post Viceroy to the Prothonotary of Aragon first appeared on History Lab.

Announcement issued by Juan de Zuñiga in 1581 calling for the counting of the Muslim Franks in Naples

Naples in the 16th century was integrated into the Spanish Monarchy as an inheritance of the Crown of Aragon. In the 16th century, the city experienced a demographic growth that was partly due to the slaves made in the Mediterranean. This was the century of the naval wars in the Mediterranean that pitted the Spanish Monarchy against the Ottoman Empire and its Maghrebi allies. In this case, in addition to the captives obtained from the raids against Barbary, there were also those taken from enemy ships. The volume of this slave population began to grow in Naples, which generated enormous concern in the political circles of the monarchy, who feared that this population was acting in collusion with the Ottoman and Barbary ships. This concern was compounded by the inability of the Inquisition to establish a presence in the city of Naples because of the political elites’ suspicion of its presence. This laxity gave rise to the feeling that this population had not really converted to the Catholic faith, and so attempts were made to convert and control them by means of this type of enactment.

The post Announcement by Juan de Zúñiga first appeared on History Lab.
