Royal Decrees on trade and tonnage

Royal decree regulating trade in the Philippines. It summarises how it was ordered up to that time and establishes the new orders: the trade between the islands and New Spain is preserved; the merchandise will not exceed a value of 250,000 pesos, and the return of them will not exceed 500,000; only 4 ships of the King of no more than 200 tons are allowed; the crew they must carry and the necessary controls to avoid losses and fraud are regulated, both in Manila and in Acapulco. Printed. Royal Decree of 23rd May 1620 to Alonso Fajardo de Tenza, Governor of the Philippines, ordering him to observe the provisions of the distribution of tons of the ships in the trade of those islands.

Instruction to Columbus: Voyage and good government in the Indies

In the course of the 15th century, Portugal and Castile were at the forefront of overseas expansion along the Atlantic coast of Africa. Progress in cartography, navigational instruments and shipbuilding made it possible to sail the Atlantic. The dispute between Portugal and Castile was settled in 1494 with the signing of the Treaty of Tordesillas, which established a dividing line 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands. Columbus’ first expedition left Cabo de Palos in August, arriving on 12 October 1492 at an island in the Caribbean, later called San Salvador. At the same time, Columbus discovered the island of Cuba and, later, the island of Santo Domingo, which was called Hispaniola. Columbus made three voyages, and it was during the third (1498) that they reached the mainland.

Documents on Juan Sebastián Elcano: will and other instruments relating to his family

Juan Sebastián Elcano was a Spanish sailor who completed the first round-the-world voyage in the Magellan-Elcano expedition, remaining at the head of the expedition after the death of Ferdinand Magellan. A native of the town of Guetaria, Elcano began his circumnavigation on 10 August 1519 and arrived in Sanlúcar de Barrameda on the Nao Victoria on 6 September 1522, after a three-year voyage. This document is contextualised a few years after his return, in 1526, the date on which he wrote his will, which can be consulted.

Hernán Cortés’ Expedition to New Spain

Information at the request of Gonzalo de Guzmán, before the governor and adelantado Diego Velázquez, about the expedition of Hernán Cortés to New Spain, taking with him Alonso Fernández Puertocarrero and Francisco Montejo, a certain Alaminos as pilot and a Bautista as master. They were determined to follow up the discoveries made earlier by Juan de Grijalva. Arriving at a certain place, they took a ship, and loading it with gold and other riches, they sailed along dark and dangerous roads, fleeing lest they be caught. Letter from Juan Sebastián de Elcano to Charles I

Letter from Juan Sebastián de Elcano to Charles I written in 1522 in which he gives news of his arrival with the Nao Victoria at Sanlúcar de Barrameda as part of the Magellan-Elcano expedition to circumnavigate the globe. In the letter, in addition to providing information, he asks the monarch for various grants. It includes the reply from the Secretary Francisco de los Cobos.

Letter from Charles I to Juan Sebastián Elcano

Letter of reply from Charles I to Juan Sebastián Elcano, written on 11 September 1522, after his arrival in Sanlúcar de Barrameda from the Magellan-Elcano expedition. In it, the monarch acknowledges receipt of his letter in which he tells him of his arrival with the ship Victoria and orders him to go, together with two of the expedition’s members – “the most sane and best reasoned” – to meet him. In the letter, Charles I informs him that he has ordered the officers of the Casa de la Contratación to dress them and provide them with what they need, and that they are to make a record of what has happened. He also granted him the quarter and the twenty that belonged to him.
