Document that records the arrival of the brigantines Descubridor and Vigilante captained by Cosme Damián de Churruca, frigate captain, for the formation of a maritime atlas in North America. Before fighting in the battle of Trafalgar (1805), where he lost his life, this military man, scientist and sailor commanded some of the most important geographical expeditions to South America. This expedition consisted of two sections, one of which was to cover the islands and coasts of the Mexican Gulf and the other the rest of the continent, with the aim of forming the maritime atlas of North America. Carried out between 1792 and 1795, Cosme Damián Churruca was accompanied by José de Mazarredo and Joaquín Francisco Fidalgo.

The post Cosme de Churruca’s expedition first appeared on History Lab.

The Contracting House, established in the Reales Alcázares in Seville in 1503, was the first administrative body created specifically for the management of America. In 1717, it was moved to Cadiz until its extinction in 1790. This institution organised, managed and processed expeditions to America, as well as controlling commercial activities and the transit of people. Although there were other Casas de Contratación in the Peninsula, the one in Seville had a monopoly on trade between Spain and its American territories; this required collaboration with the merchants’ guild and the determination of the port of Seville, which became the only one authorised for such activities.

The post Contracting House of Seville (1503-1790) first appeared on History Lab.
