The social behaviour of the Basque families most closely linked to the Court and to the political, economic and cultural activities of the Age of Enlightenment followed very marked patterns. In this sense, the marriage policy of these families was determined by the linking of their members with each other, as the case of the Munibe-Aranguren-Álava families demonstrates. These three families were closely linked to the Real Sociedad Bascongada de los Amigos del País and the projects derived from it. In this context, the three families became linked by marriage, thus consolidating their relationships and family strategies.

The Esquilache riot was the most important social, economic and political revolt of the 18th century (1766). The shortage of basic foodstuffs, including bread, and the speculation of hoarders were two of the reasons that led the lower social classes to riot against the rulers. In the case of the Motín de Esquilache, the revolt ended with the march, via Cartagena, of the Marquis, who had to leave the peninsula in the face of the events and the demands of the lower social classes.

The post Provision of Charles III on the riots that occurred in the town of Madrid between 23rd and 26th March first appeared on History Lab.

The death of the 10th Duke of Béjar (Don Manuel Diego López de Zúñiga) while fighting in Buda in 1686 is shrouded in a halo of mysticism and personal myth that lasted until almost a century later due to his role as a “martyr” for Christianity and the Crown, fighting the enemy hosts until his final moment.
In Hungary, Don Manuel played a leading role in the battles, especially in repelling the Turks on Margarita Island on 20th June and in the Castle of San Gerardo on 29th June, where his legend continues to grow with the success of his fearful advance to recover the trenches of this site, disobeying the marshal’s orders to retreat and returning safe and sound. In addition to this, he will provide support during the construction of bypasses at the fortress of Buda.
It was on 13 July 1686 that his legend was finally forged. During the final attack on the fortress of Buda, the artillerymen managed to bring down the inner wall, forming a kind of ramp from the rubble that allowed access to the interior of the Ottoman defences. It was Don Manuel who once again took the front line in the Christian offensive and facilitated the entry of the rest of the troops. The danger of being between two bastions was obvious, and at one point in the battle the Duke received a mortal musket wound which, after three days, ended his life on 16 July 1686, the day of El Carmen.

The post The fortress of Buda (Hungary) in 1696 and the role of Don Manuel Diego López de Zúñiga first appeared on History Lab.

Francisco de Saavedra was an enlightened Sevillian who, after dedicating his life to a military career, reached the Court as a minister of Charles IV during a serious social situation that he tried to resolve through some of the institutions in Granada that he had come to know during his academic training at the Colegio del Sacro Monte. This is precisely where the work attributed to Francisco de Goya is kept, as when Francisco de Saavedra was appointed Minister of Finance in 1797 he immediately informed the College, which was great news.
So much so that on 12 December 1797 the rector himself ordered that he be congratulated and commissioned a painting to celebrate the appointment, to perpetuate his figure in order to motivate the rest of the students and as a source of propaganda for this Granada institution. It is a full-length representation of Saavedra, seated in a chair and dressed in the costume of a captain general.

The post Francisco de Saavedra attributed to Goya first appeared on History Lab.

The nobility in the Modern Age was one of the most important groups in Spanish societies. This is why it can be studied from different historical approaches. This article deals with the reflection left by this social group through the mansions they inhabited, marking part of the evolution of the city of Salamanca during the Modern Age.
In the 18th century, the houses of those Salamancan families that made up the Salamancan nobility who settled in the city during the 16th century stand out, and who in this more recent chronology enjoyed a higher social and economic position than their previous generations. As can be seen in the resource, the vast majority of the Salamancan noble houses in 1784 were located in the centre of the enclosure, with only a few families established in the outer rings.

The post Location of the 18th century noble houses in Salamanca first appeared on History Lab.

At the beginning of the Modern Age, the different Hispanic kings, in their search for support, gradually ceded part of their jurisdiction to the nobility, but during the second half of the 15th century, the towns tried to take advantage of the wars between the Agramonteses and the Beaumonteses to gain the support of the monarchs. The intention of the towns, which did not resign themselves to losing their royal status, was to free themselves from seignorial jurisdiction, a fact that was maintained throughout the 16th and 17th centuries.
Navarre also underwent this process of cession of royal patrimony, with the high nobility receiving noble titles accompanied by extensive lordships with their corresponding rents and jurisdiction. Moreover, they tried to usurp these rights when circumstances were favourable to them.
This situation continued in Navarre until the 17th century, with the recovery of territories by the Crown interceding with new alienations in the search for resources for a royal treasury in crisis.

The post Navarrese lay lordships with jurisdiction in the second half of the 15th century first appeared on History Lab.
