]]> The coat of arms is included in the “Documentos e información de la calidad de D Alonso Igualada y Ríos Enríquez de Toledo, regidor decano del Ilmo. Ayuntamiento de esta ciudad, y de Da Isabel Negro Espejo de la Calle y Calvo su mujer”, dated 1799 in Vélez-Málaga. An enquiry aimed at verifying family nobility with the specific objective of placing the offspring both in the militia and in the ecclesiastical hierarchy with the best possibilities of promotion, in which no concrete proof of nobility appears, but rather interrogations of the residents of the towns where they resided, referring to their employment in offices of honour and their noble way of life.

Noble families, or those who lived nobly, used to flaunt these elements of prestige in their houses, as well as in their arms and clothing, in fact, in the interrogations carried out on neighbours to verify their nobility, questions were usually asked about coats of arms and jewels, the use of horses, the service of servants and preferential seats in the church, symbols of a high social status. The Igualadas formed part of the municipal council, and this employment in local government also meant access to social and economic relations that marked their pre-eminence in the city.

]]> Genealogy of a family belonging to the local elite of Vélez-Málaga, what some authors have called urban nobility, essentially characterised by their lack of titles but being considered as such in their locality, as well as for being intermediaries between the royal power and their subjects. The Igualadas occupied regidurias in the Municipal Council from the end of the 17th century, gaining access to the post by purchase and carrying out consolidation strategies through marriage links with the families of their fellow councillors or titled nobility, which can be clearly seen in the family tree.
