The word Balkan is Turkish and means ‘mountain’. The Balkans, or the Balkan Peninsula, is a region in the south-east of Europe. This map shows the geography of the Balkans and their religious and ethnic diversity. On this map the Balkans comprise the areas of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania. The westernmost part of Turkey is also included. The largest of the colour-coded groups on the map is the South Slavs or Yugoslav group which forms the majority of the population in several countries. The other national groups represented here are Romanians, Greeks and Albanians, as well as many other ethnic minorities who live in the region.

The post Ethnographical map reproduced from The Balkan Peninsula by Jovan Cvijić first appeared on History Lab.

“Icon” is the Greek word for “image” and Orthodox Christian icons contain information that is presented in a concentrated visual format. Through the use of formal techniques and specific symbolism, they direct the hearts and minds of worshippers toward God. Icons are not merely decorative religious paintings; they are sacred objects that connect people to the figures that they portray. The ancient church affirmed that icons “partake of the nature of the original”. The images facilitate a two-way interaction: when individuals venerate them and use them for prayer, they receive spiritual benefit through the efficacy of the pictured people and events.

The post The Mother of God and the Saints: Orthodox Christian Icons at Maryhill Museum of Art first appeared on History Lab.
