Didactica 2.0 Museos en Femenino is the result of joint work between a team from the Instituto de Investigaciones Feministas of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the Asociación e-Mujeres and the teams from the museums participating in the project: Museo del Prado, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Museo del Traje and Museo Nacional de Cerámica González Martí. The project focuses on women in art and aims to develop joint actions in the field of museums to disseminate and facilitate knowledge of the cultural heritage held in them and promote their integration. On the website, each of the participating museums offers detailed and precise itineraries, as well as access to the corresponding teaching guides. These guides are extremely useful for both students and teachers. It is therefore a very useful tool for dissemination and teaching to guide the analysis of art and history from a gender perspective. For the period of the Modern Age, the proposals that best fit its chronology are those of the Museo del Prado and, in part, those of the Museo Nacional de Cerámica González Martí and the Museo del Traje.

The post Didactics 2.0 Museums in women’s terms first appeared on History Lab.

Guardianship was a recognised legal concept under the ancien régime and was characterised by the high mortality rate between the parents. In order to support minors, a guardian was appointed who, in addition to guaranteeing the minor’s education, had to pay for his or her food and other needs. For this purpose, he took the income left by the orphan’s parents as a trustee. He also had to ensure the good use of this patrimony because, ultimately, it did not belong to him and because it would become the property of the minor once he reached adulthood. The guardian had to clear up the accounts by paying the debts contracted by the parents and had to see to it as far as possible that this patrimony was increased. On most occasions this office was classified by the legislation itself as a burdensome position, as María Gema Cava López points out. On many occasions, there was a lack of interest in taking on such a laborious post (with the exception of those in which the patrimony was of great importance), which is why incentives were offered to those who would take it on, such as the concession of a tenth of the yield of the assets administered.

The post Process in which Domingo Sánchez takes over as vine tutor with María Martín as his pupil first appeared on History Lab.

Testamentary deeds are a privileged source of information on the Ancien Régime. In this specific case, we are dealing with the will of Juan Martínez de la Iglesia, made in 1712. Martínez de la Iglesia was a priest and commissioner of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in the town of El Bonillo (Albacete). The first testamentary mandates, oriented towards Catholic spiritual devotion, reflect the mentality of the time. Subsequently, he took stock of his movable and immovable assets, bequeathing them to his nieces (remember that ecclesiastics, being subject to celibacy, were not allowed to have children). Finally, for the economic well-being of the family, the priest founded a patronage of laymen to ensure a fixed income for those who owned it. What did the patronages consist of? They were a perpetual foundation whereby the founder segregated certain assets from his patrimony. The annual income from these assets, such as rents, was used to pay for masses for the founder’s soul and for the upkeep of the patronage’s administrator. In this specific case, the patronage is supported by the office of an ensign of the neighbouring town of Munera, a census, some country houses and a mill. With this patrimony, which could not be sold or disposed of as it was linked to the patronage, the perpetual performance of 12 annual masses was ensured. The example shown offers numerous possibilities for analysis of a spiritual, patrimonial and family nature, of reproduction and social mobility, of the system of transmission of inheritances, etc.

The post Will of Juan Martínez de la Iglesia with the foundation of a lay patronage (1712) first appeared on History Lab.
