Transcription of the will and codicils of Don Baltasar Rodrigo de Balboa Calvillo, a member of the power elite of Huéscar (Granada), made in 1647. Lord of the villas of Cotillas and Casablanca, he was also the High Constable of the said town and a major constable of the Inquisition. From 1635 he headed the entailed estate founded by Rodrigo de Balboa, his fourth grandfather. The text refers to the lawsuit he was involved in over the Cotillas entailed estate. There are indications of a financial nature, especially referring to deeds of obligation and debts contracted. In this sense, the debts he has with his servants and for the value of 2620 masses stand out. There may be a possible case of bastardy. He justifies that a boy and a girl whose upbringing he assumed in Hellín and Murcia are not his children. The two marriages he contracted are specified, alluding to the value of the dowries, the arras and other commitments. He leaves as his heir his only daughter Doña Elvira de Balboa, as well as another possible son or daughter he might have with his second and current wife Doña Pascuala de Villanueva if she were pregnant at the time of his death. He also encloses a codicil in which he states that the post of major constable of the Inquisition, which he holds “for three lives”, should pass to his brother-in-law Don Juan García de Villanueva, his wife’s brother. And for the “third life” of the post he appoints the person his wife designates. Finally, in the codicil he makes some clarifications and additions, especially in relation to the debts contracted with his servants and other bequests made to them.

Marriage contracts between members of the power elite of Huéscar (Granada) in 1624. Dispensation of consanguinity is necessary due to the existence of kinship between the contracting parties. The conditions of the marriage are made explicit. Among them, the bride will contribute 5000 ducats, of which 3000 will be in trousseau, jewels and house plus the expenses of the dispensation, and the rest in money. The bridegroom will contribute the goods that his father D. Gabriel Carrasco Girón has and enjoys from the bond founded by Don Gabriel Carrasco and Andrés Carrasco, his father and grandfather, which are the house and farmhouse of the Raigadas with all its annexes and belongings and the main houses that he has in the city. In addition, he is granted a vineyard of 7000 vines. It is specified that his father cedes, renounces and transfers the usufruct and emolument of the entail and bond to the said Captain Andrés Carrasco Girón, his eldest son. He will also be the heir to another entailed estate held by his father and founded by Mayno de Cernúsculi, the latter’s grandfather.

Transcribed document of the inventory of goods and rents made in 1752 from the Balboa, Carrasco and Cernúsculi entailed estates accumulated by Don Cristóbal de Bustos Carrasco Balboa. This is an example of the patrimony of the members of the power elite of a mountainous area of southern Spain such as Huéscar (Granada) in the mid-18th century. All properties are detailed, with special mention of the land, specifying the extension, quality, type of crops, number of trees and vines as well as the location. It also lists houses, plots of land, censuses and a flour mill, all of them with their annual income. The inventory is valued at 56,676 reales 30 mrs/year, and above all the irrigated land, which is worth 44,023 reales 13 mrs/year

Testamentary deeds are a privileged source of information on the Ancien Régime. In this specific case, we are dealing with the will of Juan Martínez de la Iglesia, made in 1712. Martínez de la Iglesia was a priest and commissioner of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in the town of El Bonillo (Albacete). The first testamentary mandates, oriented towards Catholic spiritual devotion, reflect the mentality of the time. Subsequently, he took stock of his movable and immovable assets, bequeathing them to his nieces (remember that ecclesiastics, being subject to celibacy, were not allowed to have children). Finally, for the economic well-being of the family, the priest founded a patronage of laymen to ensure a fixed income for those who owned it. What did the patronages consist of? They were a perpetual foundation whereby the founder segregated certain assets from his patrimony. The annual income from these assets, such as rents, was used to pay for masses for the founder’s soul and for the upkeep of the patronage’s administrator. In this specific case, the patronage is supported by the office of an ensign of the neighbouring town of Munera, a census, some country houses and a mill. With this patrimony, which could not be sold or disposed of as it was linked to the patronage, the perpetual performance of 12 annual masses was ensured. The example shown offers numerous possibilities for analysis of a spiritual, patrimonial and family nature, of reproduction and social mobility, of the system of transmission of inheritances, etc.

The post Will of Juan Martínez de la Iglesia with the foundation of a lay patronage (1712) first appeared on History Lab.
