Jose de Mazarredo Salazar (1745-1812), born in Bilbao, reached the rank of Admiral and Lieutenant General of the Navy. One of the most outstanding sailors in the history of Spain, he was a man of science as well as an outstanding organiser of naval tactics. Author of various works and leader of several scientific expeditions, his military work did not prevent him from presiding over the General Assemblies of Vizcaya in 1808 in which Joseph Bonaparte was sworn in as Lord of Vizcaya.

The social behaviour of the Basque families most closely linked to the Court and to the political, economic and cultural activities of the Age of Enlightenment followed very marked patterns. In this sense, the marriage policy of these families was determined by the linking of their members with each other, as the case of the Munibe-Aranguren-Álava families demonstrates. These three families were closely linked to the Real Sociedad Bascongada de los Amigos del País and the projects derived from it. In this context, the three families became linked by marriage, thus consolidating their relationships and family strategies.

The French pharmacist Louis Proust, one of the fathers of modern chemistry, was professor of chemistry at the Royal Seminary of Vergara. This institution, created under the protection of the Real Sociedad Bascongada de los Amigos del País, recruited some of the best minds of the time: François Duboix, Geronimo Mas, Pierre François Chabaneau, Louis Joseph Proust, Fausto de Elhuyar and Anders Nikolaus Thunborg. In this document, the chemistry professor writes to the Director of the institution, the 10th Count of Peñaflorida, about various economic matters.

Document containing the founding statutes of the Real Sociedad Bascongada de los Amigos del país, the first Economic Society founded in the Hispanic Monarchy in 1765. Under the impetus of Xavier María de Munibe, Count of Peñaflorida, the Bascongada was created with the aim of promoting development, science and culture. The headquarters of the institution were established in the Insausti Palace in Azkoitia, and the list of members included important personalities of the society such as Valentín de Foronda, Pablo de Olavide and Félix María Samaniego.

Juan José de Elhuyar, a Spanish scientist born in Logroño, was, together with his brother Fausto de Elhuyar, the first to isolate tungsten. They were both granted a scholarship by the Spanish monarchy to study at different European universities. In 1784, he was sent to Santa Fe de Bogotá to work in the mines of Mariquita. This document contains a dossier of information and a passenger licence to the Indies from Juan José de Elhúyar, commissioner for the promotion of the mines of the New Kingdom of Granada, to Cartagena de Indias, with the following people: Angel Díaz, commissioner; Francisco Llamas, servant, born in Socuéllamos, son of Pablo and Isabel Poveda; Antonio Pastrana, servant, born in Buenos Aires, son of Julián and Agustina Jibaja.
