The increase in prices in Cartagena in the middle of the 18th century provoked unrest among the population. Some people sent a letter to the Governor of the city asking him to reduce the price of foodstuffs, on pain of being “burnt and fried in boiling oil”. The document then continues with the news that the following day bread was sold for eight quarters, made of water and flour; there would be enough for everyone.

The post Pasquines threatening the Governor of Cartagena over the price of bread (1766) first appeared on History Lab.

In the second half of the 18th century, the price of bread increased in many Spanish cities. The unrest among the population meant that the authorities tried to take measures to avoid riots. In Palencia, we know that in 1766, the corregidor José Firmat informed the Count of Aranda (president of the Council) of the increase in the number of bakers with ovens paid for by the Town Council in order to avoid riots. The date of the document, 22 April, only foretold the riot that took place a day later in the city, where gangs of young men asked for a reduction in the price of foodstuffs, which was immediately granted by the mayor.

The post Increase of bakers to prevent a riot in Palencia (1766) first appeared on History Lab.

The extinction of the Jesuits provoked a conflict between the Papacy and Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria. The dialectic and conflict of power between Church and State was reflected in the fact that Maria Theresa wanted the assets obtained from the Jesuits to go to her civil jurisdiction, to the detriment of the Vatican’s claims. The Empress argued that in Spain, France, Portugal and Naples the goods of the Society fell to the State. Charles III supported her in this request.

The post Letter from Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria, to Charles III regarding the Jesuits’ property (1773) first appeared on History Lab.

During the second half of the 18th century, young people in Madrid showed a change in trends with respect to the professional groups who wore French garments. If at the beginning of the century it was the military, nobles and officers of the Royal Household who most used Gallic clothing, the “fashion” gradually spread to the bourgeois classes linked to education, technical competence, security, doctors and apothecaries. Twenty percent of this group was now above the military, the nobility and the Royal Household (4%, 5% and 6% respectively), as well as clerks, businessmen and those connected with the guilds and crafts. Overall, French-style dress became the fashion throughout the 18th century.

The Floridablanca Census, carried out during the reign of Charles III in 1787, is one of the first censuses carried out using modern accounting techniques.
