The Spanish aristocracy devoted part of its efforts to establishing an urban structure that would identify it as a nobiliary space and would be another part of its propaganda strategy. The ties that bound these power elites obliged them, to a certain extent, to behave in a supportive manner towards the community as part of their social legitimisation. Within this vision, the nobiliary city can be analysed as a material cultural product and as a structuring element of aristocratic power.
During the 16th century, several nobiliary parties tried to exercise power at Court, and their rivalry can be seen in the different cultural features they applied in the cities under their influence: politics, religion and urban structure. Each side systematically applied common architectural criteria in the cities, but these resulted in very different forms of administration and ideologies.
In towns such as Cuéllar, Benavente or Alba de Tormes, the aristocracy established guidelines linked to medieval traditions, such as the dominance of the castle over the rest of the town. Efforts, therefore, were made to modernise the castle on the inside, even reforming it towards more luxurious standards, but maintaining the sober and powerful image on the outside.

The post Plan of Benavente and its urban structure in the 16th century first appeared on History Lab.

Portrait of Íñigo López de Mendoza painted by Juan Bautista de Espinosa

The post Íñigo López de Mendoza, 2nd Count of Tendilla and 1st Marquis of Mondejar first appeared on History Lab.

Íñigo López de Mendoza stood out as a great ally of King Ferdinand the Catholic, being captain general of the Kingdom of Granada and participating directly in the War of Granada at the end of the 15th century. After the victory, he was appointed the first governor of Granada, a post he held until the end of his life, combining the coexistence of victors and vanquished with the affairs of running the city, such as administrative and economic matters.
The original work was kept in the former collection of the Duke of Osuna, although its track has been lost, but it appears constantly in the documentation. The copy made by Francisco Díaz Carreño between 1877 and 1878, which is in the collections of the Museo del Prado, is better known today.
Both the portrait itself and the meticulousness with which it complements the setting are outstanding pictorially. It shows the main figure in front of a window, with a grenade emphasising the importance of the conflict in Granada and with significant elements of military command such as the staff in his hand and the helmet resting on the window. Stylistically, Juan Bautista de Espinosa shows the strong portrait painting tradition of the late 16th century, marking out isolated figures and very precise lines in the drawing.

The post Íñigo López de Mendoza, 2nd Count of Tendilla and 1st Marquis of Mondejar first appeared on History Lab.

Several mythological scenes, with a deeply erotic content, which are now in various museums in Madrid, London, Edinburgh and Boston. The one in the Hermitage does not appear to be part of this cycle, but it is very similar, with other Danaes by Titian in London (Wellington Collection) and Naples (Museo di Capodimonte)

The post Dánae, Titian first appeared on History Lab.

Juan de Juanes, a major figure of the Valencian Renaissance, was noted for his religious scenes and portraits. In this work he combines both genres. The Venerable Agnesio places the ring on Saint Agnes, in a kind of Mystical Nuptials. The centre of the picture is occupied by the Virgin and Child, surrounded by the Infant Saint John the Baptist, angels, Saints Dorothea and Theophilus. In the background, in a magnificent landscape, we can make out the figure of St George on horseback, slaying the dragon. It is a kind of Italian Sacra Conversazione, full of symbolism and great attention to detail.

The post Our Lady of the Venerable Agnesius first appeared on History Lab.

Straddles the period between late Gothic and early Renaissance. It is an example of aristocratic residences, which move from castles to cities. In this case, the Mendozas controlled a royal city such as Guadalajara, where they also established their pantheon. They were one of the most egregious lineages of the Greatness of Spain, standing out as politicians, warriors, men of letters and ecclesiastics. Their domains show the patronage and collectionism typical of their high status.

The post Infantado Palace first appeared on History Lab.

One of the first works of the Spanish Renaissance. It was sold at the beginning of the 20th century and is on display in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. It was commissioned by the 1st Marquis of Vélez and executed between 1506 and 1515. Its author is unknown. But the design is clearly Italianate. While the exterior of the fortress is severe, the interior was a rich palazzo in Renaissance fashion. An example of the despoilment of Spanish heritage

The post Courtyard of the Castle of Vélez Blanco first appeared on History Lab.

The Nativity of Hercules is one of the ten friezes that decorated the Castle of Vélez Blanco. Carved in wood, six of them narrate the triumphs of Caesar and four the labours of Hercules. They connect the Fajardo lineage with Greco-Roman glory, which was also claimed by the kings of Spain. Together with the courtyard they were sold in 1904, ending up in the Museum of Decorative Arts, where they lay forgotten for decades, until they were recently identified.

The post Frieze of the Castle of Vélez Blanco first appeared on History Lab.
