In 1789, the French Revolution broke out. This was a historic experience that called into question the foundations of the ancien régime. The revolutionary and violent nature of the events created a feeling among European royalty that their power was in danger. The circulation of publications as well as the popularisation of revolutionary slogans and speeches showed the need to generate a counter-revolutionary discourse that would discredit the theoretical foundations of the French revolutionaries. In addition to the reaction of the European crowns in their coalition against the Republic, censorship mechanisms were applied in Spain that tended to control the transfer of population and the circulation of ideas. Any kind of press publication on the subject was also banned. In this case, Miguel Bañuelos, employed in the military administration in the Spain of Charles IV, wrote this text in response to the events that were shaking Europe. He thus defends the foundations of the estamental order behind the ancien régime. However, his text was not published because of the ban on anything to do with the French Revolution. It may be interesting to show pupils how this order was defended by a contemporary who was in favour of the continuity of the ancien régime.

The post Speech against the principles of equality and liberty of 1795 first appeared on History Lab.
