The era of the legal glossators – scholars who annotated (glossed) and interpreted Roman legal texts – began with the resumption of the study of Roman law in Bologna at the end of the 11th century; one of their first tasks was to reconstruct Justinian’s Digest, the 6th-century compilation of Roman law, by comparing existing manuscripts. The work of the jurists and the birth of the ‘Bolognese School of Glossators’ were decisive for the development of European society.
