Some dates, scattered throughout the birth of modernity, mark the awareness of the aberration that constituted slavery: 1688 when the American Quakers condemn it in no uncertain terms, 1794 when the French Revolution forbids it or 2007, the year of belated ban in Mauritania. Abolitionism is a long and troubled process that brings human dignity back to the center of values. It becomes a real revolution of mentalities in the moment of maximum expansion of the black trafficking towards the Americas. With one of the world’s leading experts on slavery, Professor Olivier Grenouilleau, author of reference works such as “Les traites négrières. Essai d’histoire global” or “La révolution abolitionniste” starts from emancipation to tell us about evolution history of a planetary violation of people’s rights: the slave trade not only marked the history of the West, but also and for a longer duration that of the Muslim world as well as of various African kingdoms. Without forgetting that slavery characterized the classical antiquity of great civilizations such as the Greco-Roman one.

The post The slave routes first appeared on History Lab.

In 1842, the British Consul General in Morocco wrote a letter to the Sultan to ask him if he had taken any measures to stop slavery or at least, slave trade. The sultan replied that he will not do anything about it because it has been the norm since the time of the sons of Adam and no sects of Islam are against it. Hence, he will not permit anything the Qur’an forbids and will not make unlawful anything that the Qur’an has allowed. In the Sultan’s reply, we see the simplest justification or at least, excuse, for almost 1300 years of slavery in the Islamic world.

The post History of Arab Slave Trade first appeared on History Lab.

In the 16th century, the slave trade decimated the African population, causing devastation and hardship, the signs of which still remain today. In the 21st, migrations from the Global South are a "voluntary" phenomenon-though a forced choice, for so many-but they bring to mind this sad and dark past. In both cases, there are people who profit from the exodus of these human beings.
