Gazeta is the database that offers the historical collection of the Official Gazette and contains provisions and news published in the official newspapers that preceded the current “Official State Gazette” from 1661 to 1959. The digital collection contains around 1,450,000 documents with a wide variety of news items – announcements, communications, regulations, etc. – many of them of great historical interest, constituting a rich source of information on the most important events of each period, both national and foreign. The database offers an index with the different historical periods it covers, including the reigns and main historical moments of Spain from the 17th to the 20th centuries. On the other hand, it is important to point out that since its beginning in 1661 and throughout its history, the Gaceta received different titles, and that at certain historical moments, several official newspapers coexisted under different names.

The post Madrid Gazette first appeared on History Lab.

It is important to mention some aspects in relation to this illustration. Firstly, the importance of the church as a building that articulates the space both in the city and in rural areas should be emphasised. The ascription of society to a particular religion, in this case Christianity, decides that this type of building is the soul of the inhabited space. This is why we can see the importance of the church when it is represented with a larger size than the rest of the buildings. Originally, cities and towns were built around the religious building, which used to be the foundational infrastructure of the population. Secondly, the importance of the church as a centre of fiscal perception and at the same time as a generator of documentation relating to the resident population should be emphasised. Throughout the 18th century, projects to account for the resources that kings had, as well as the capacity of their states, expressed in terms of wealth and population, began to take shape. The fact that the population was fixed around the churches where they had to pay the tithe made it easier for the king’s officials to have access to this information. With the documentation generated in these churches relating to censuses, baptisms, marriages, etc., a large part of the censuses and cadastres of 18th century Spain could be drawn up.

The post Jubrique (Malaga.

The Viceroy was the administrative figure during the Spanish Empire responsible for administering and governing, on behalf of the Spanish Monarchy, a territory. The Viceroy was therefore the personal representative of the King of Spain in other places. In the case of the Americas, due to the great extent of its possessions, the Spanish Crown created two Viceroyalties, the Viceroyalty of New Spain (1535-1821) and the Viceroyalty of Peru (1542-1824). In the case of the former, the life of the Viceroyalty of New Spain was governed internally from the buildings that formed the surroundings of the main square of Mexico City, such as the Viceroyal Palace, the City Hall, the Mint, the University and the Cathedral. The palace, in addition to being the seat of the viceroy, included numerous official offices, making it the nerve centre of viceregal power. The five panels on the right of the screen in the image depict the characteristics of this building before it burned down as a result of the riot of 1692. Opposite the façade of the Palace was the city’s most important market, El Parián, where many goods arrived from Manila. Its stalls sold all kinds of products and utensils, as well as the numerous foodstuffs that supplied the city from the surrounding area. The remaining three pages contain an incomplete view of the Paseo de la Alameda in the Spanish capital. This work offers a view of viceregal society and the role played by its different members. Thus, the ruling class is represented by Spaniards and Creoles, who were involved in the official and leisure world, going to the palace or strolling along the Alameda, while mestizos, mulattos and indigenous people were mainly engaged in service and merchant work.

The post Screen of the Palace of the Viceroys of Mexico first appeared on History Lab.

During the modern age, punitive justice was administered both by the king’s officials and by the inquisitorial power, which had its own courts. In addition to the traditional crimes such as theft, swindling, piracy or murder, there were other types of crimes that were also punishable from the mental and material parameters of the time. It should be borne in mind that, being in a different historical moment, the social conventions on what type of conduct constituted a crime or not were also different. In this case, according to the studies of Antonio Catalá Sanz and Pablo Pérez García, the following were considered as crimes constituting the maximum penalty: heresy and blasphemy, sodomy and bestiality, crimes of lèse-majesté, rebellion, falsehood, etc. In this case, we have a graph showing those executed in Valencia over a period of 50 years during the modern age. It can be useful to bring students closer to questions related to criminality or punitive justice in other periods, highlighting the need to take into account the historical context at any given time.

The post Executed in Valencia (1450-1500) first appeared on History Lab.

In the 15th century, the city of Valencia was a commercial emporium and a cosmopolitan location in the Mediterranean. The commercial boom of the city, accentuated in the 15th century, also implied an increase in social and economic inequalities and therefore an increase in the population on the threshold of misery. Prostitution also obeyed these general dynamics of misery, but also an opportunity for enrichment, given that the city was a continuous flow of travellers and merchandise, as Pablo Pérez García says. Prostitution was regulated by the kings of the Crown of Aragon, creating an institutionalised building, the brothel, which was under the authority of the cities. For the study of prostitution in Valencia, we have the Llibres de Cédules and the accounting books of the urban court. However, these sources have a number of problems, such as their preservation and the lack of precision of the actors in question (Pablo Pérez García). The practice of prostitution outside the legal channels was punishable and in this sense, records are kept of women who had problems with the justice system, where they were often fined and even imprisoned. The social profile of these women who practised clandestine prostitution, according to Pablo Pérez García, was that of single/widowed women who carried out other secondary jobs such as maids, seamstresses, maids, etc.

The post Women prosecuted for the crime of clandestine prostitution (1479-1518) first appeared on History Lab.
