]]> Jacopo Bassano, a painter of the 16th-century Venetian school, entitled the present work “The Forge of Vulcan”. Despite the fact that there is no mythological content in the composition, Bassano’s intention was to move away from Renaissance ideals regarding the depiction of classical scenes, thus marking a difference with his Venetian colleagues. For Jacopo Bassano the focus is on a blacksmith’s scene with figures dressed in a contemporary manner in which the subject was an excuse to observe how the light strikes the various surfaces. In this way he succeeded in showing how this workroom is depicted, showing the daily utensils and the qualities of the metals in the light of the fire in a totally idealised space.
