]]> In eighteenth-century Madrid it was common to hold parties with theatrical performances in private homes. The owners of the house and their friends took part in these improvised performances as actors. Paret’s painting is one of these intimate rehearsals. In the background, a lady is sewing a costume, while the bullfighting painting hanging on the wall is evidence of the family distinction. On the other hand, it is worth noting that the scene demonstrates how a family is able to pay for a performance in its own domestic space.
