]]> Teniers’s work depicts a male figure drinking and smoking while looking expressively towards the viewer. Another companion, in a more distant view, is in the interior of the tavern, where still-life elements such as jars, basins and barrels are prominent. Identified as a soldier resting after a campaign, it is also a depiction of everyday life in Flanders, which should be placed in the context of the Thirty Years’ War that pitted the United Provinces against various allies of the Spanish Monarchy in the theatre of northern and southern Europe.
