Philip III’s valide appears as a statesman and warrior at the height of his powers, ready to defend the reputation of the Spanish Monarchy. It is a key portrait for understanding the pre-eminence of the court aristocracy during the Habsburg period. These equestrian portraits derive from Roman bronze statuary dedicated to emperors, which was taken up again in the Renaissance to pay homage to princes and condottieros.
