										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Looking across the basilica of San Marco, this view captures the splendour of the ceremony that takes place on the banks of the holy site. Boats carry spectators and lively gondoliers surround the gold and red boat or Bucintoro. Every year on Ascension Day, the Bucintoro is rowed into the lagoon where the Doge of Venice threw a blessed ring into the water to symbolise the marriage between Venice and the sea. A large crowd gathers along the quay as well as several spectators on the balconies of the Doge&#8217;s Palace. Canaletto depicted an enthusiastic crowd with great precision using small dots to recreate groups of people.
