Age of Empires II features historical campaigns based on a novel storyline that spans a vast period between the 5th and 16th centuries. This definitive edition was released in 2019 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the original video game released in 1999, making some corrections and technologically improving an already excellent base.
Historically the game features the campaigns of 18 civilisations, starting in the Middle Ages after the fall of the Western Roman Empire and running through to the European Renaissance of the 16th century. The goal is therefore to strategically manage resources to build a vast empire and overcome other enemy factions.
The campaigns take a historical look at the lives and triumphs of different key figures from our past, such as William Wallace, Joan of Arc, Saladin and Genghis Khan, among others. As for the factions, this year’s factions are divided into Western European, Central European, Middle Eastern and Far Eastern factions, each with their own unique units and historically known warriors.

The post Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition first appeared on History Lab.

This instalment of the Age of Empires saga focuses on 14 of the most powerful civilisations in Europe, the Americas and Asia, spanning a historical period from the 16th to the 19th centuries. In this definitive edition, the graphics and music have been remastered, including all the expansions released to date and other never-before-seen content. The civilisations available include Spain, England, France, Portugal, Russia, Germany and many others.
The game’s setting focuses on the era of European colonisation of the Americas, with the Old World nations facing off against the newly developing powers. New in comparison to the previous game, each civilisation has a detailed 3D metropolis, and troop progression is added through role-playing elements. In addition, with the new content already added, it allows the option of playing independence revolutions to rise up against the colonising civilisation.

The post Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition first appeared on History Lab.

Age of Empires IV is the latest instalment in the popular real-time historical strategy saga

The post Age of Empires IV first appeared on History Lab.

Age of Empires returns 16 years later to demonstrate why it is one of the most recognised sagas in historical strategy. On this occasion it combines the management that brought it so much success in its time with other innovative tools that facilitate the entry of both the new player to the strategy genre, thanks to the complete integrated tutorials, and the veteran who is looking for a challenge to match and who can handle more complex game mechanics and combat techniques.
Historically, this time it seeks to recreate the great battles that led to the building of our world as we know it. Through 8 civilisations, passing through England, China, France or the Sultanate of Delhi, we will face four great campaigns: the Norman conquest of England, the Hundred Years’ War, the Grand Duchy of Moscow and the history of the Mongol Empire. All these elements centre the game from the Dark Ages to the Renaissance of the 16th century.

The post Age of Empires IV first appeared on History Lab.

GreedFall invites the player to discover a distant, fictional island in which the 17th century European Baroque aesthetic is recreated with great skill, encouraging the player to discover its landscape through exploration and diplomacy. Although there are supernatural elements in its colonialist plot, the historical representation of the period weapons and armour featured in the game, as well as the pursuit of verisimilitude in the architecture of the different cities visited during the game, are particularly noteworthy.
During the numerous conversations in the game, and doing justice to the role-playing genre to which the game belongs, the characters often tend to be overexposed, expressing all kinds of facts about the historical background or the customs of certain personalities.
Other topics such as the political and social consequences of the plagues, the struggle of reason against faith among the citizens and the spirituality of this chronology are also dealt with, and the cultural and political conflicts between the different peoples of the island, each with their own cultural traits and costumes, are treated with particular success.

The post GreedFall first appeared on History Lab.

This sequel to American Conquest introduces new nations and historical campaigns in the New World

The post American Conquest: Fight Back first appeared on History Lab.

As a sequel to Fight Back, American Conquest introduces new historical and playable elements to provide a more complete understanding of the American period between 1517 and 1804. This time around, five new nations are introduced, including Germany, Russia, the Haida Natives of Alaska, the Netherlands and Portugal, as well as 26 bonus missions. Through eight new campaigns, the conquest of Alaska, the establishment of German colonies in Chile and the numerous battles of the Spanish Empire across the vast American territory will be revealed.
In terms of military strategy, the role of tactical formations dominated by these armies, both for infantry and for cavalry and artillery, is gaining in importance, and the morale system present in American Conquest is complemented by factors such as the equipment of the troops, their supplies and the possibility of hiring or not mercenaries to support them on the battlefield.

The post American Conquest: Fight Back first appeared on History Lab.

DomiNations is a strategy video game available on both Android and iOS in which you start chronologically from a small village in ancient times to managing a thriving metropolis in the near future. During the evolution of the game it is possible to trade and fight with nations further back in time or advanced in time, generating evident differences in resources and allowing to observe what it means for each player.
Through this videogame it is possible to study the military and technological strategy that has made possible the great discoveries of history, introducing great virtual personalities to explain it, such as Leonardo Da Vinci or Catherine the Great. In addition, the commanders of the armies are real historical figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Joan of Arc or Alexander the Great, through which you can appreciate their biography and most important events. History can also be learnt through the construction of the Wonders of the World, such as the Pyramids of Egypt or the Roman Coliseum, full of descriptions and anecdotes.

The post DomiNations first appeared on History Lab.

Cossacks 3 returns after a decade-long hiatus in the saga to demonstrate the need to complement military work with economics, diplomacy and construction

The post Cossacks 3 first appeared on History Lab.

Cossacks returns a decade later with its third instalment to once again demonstrate the importance of strategically combining warfare, army building, construction, economics and technology to achieve victory as a nation. This time the historical focus is on the events of the 17th and 18th centuries, doubling the number of simultaneous units from the last instalment to 32,000 and with full 3D rendering of characters and scenarios.
Playably, the influence, both moral and military, that certain units can have on the battlefield has been introduced. Thus, with 20 nations available, 120 different units, 100 technical upgrades and 220 buildings recreated historically true to the original, the player can not only relive the battles of the era, but also build modern-day cities and extend their dominance to the sea.
On this occasion, the number of fields has been reduced to five, thus aiming for concreteness rather than quantity and explaining in more detail the events that shaped the most important events of the Modern Age.

The post Cossacks 3 first appeared on History Lab.

Historical strategy game in which the player, through the convergence of cultures and his decisions, will be in charge of creating the human story of his civilisation

The post Humankind first appeared on History Lab.

Humankind is a historical, economic, military and social strategy video game in which the player is responsible for creating a civilisation and advancing it over the centuries through increasingly complex decisions, setting the path for all its citizens. Once the civilisation has been created, elements from up to 60 well-defined real cultures and histories from the Ancient to the Contemporary Ages can be integrated.
Playably, each of the cultures present in the game presents unique challenges and possibilities, showing the reasons why some of them managed to achieve hegemony (total or partial) in their time of development. The possibilities of combining cultures are almost limitless, facing different historical events through shocking decisions that will mark the evolution of the scientific advances that will be discovered during the game, while each element of the game has been captured with the utmost historical rigour.
As far as the game system and battles are concerned, the “4X” system has been chosen, mixing real-time strategy with the more classic board turns. The armies and special units of each culture will be deployed across the map squares, using military strategy to besiege and occupy other cities.
The ultimate goal is not to destroy the other civilisations. In this case, a so-called “fame” system has been chosen, with each difficulty overcome being rewarded with fame points. In the end, the player with the most fame will win, leaving the greatest possible mark on the game world, and thus influencing the other cultures in a reciprocal way.

The post Humankind first appeared on History Lab.

Physics-based video game that realistically recreates 17th century weapons, armour and combat techniques

The post Hellish Quart first appeared on History Lab.

Hellish Quart proposes an innovative system based on fencing duels. Based on period weapons and armour, it uses a complex physics system to realistically recreate the interactions that could take place during these duels. The characters have been recreated using motion capture techniques to also provide the greatest realism during the fights.
Fencing duels employ a variety of weapons and combat styles, optimised for sabres, rapiers, swords and more, with the ability to use wooden weapons if the player prefers. During the duels, based on fencing duels, it is as important to attack the opponent’s flanks at the right moment as it is to keep an active guard against the opponent’s attack, and it is won with strategy, wit and reflexes.
Historically the game takes place in the 17th century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, with the character models made by 3D scanning of clothing showing different costumes rooted in each region visited.

The post Hellish Quart first appeared on History Lab.

City-building and survival game based on volatile social dynamics

In Patron, during the game you must produce and accumulate resources in order to expand from the initial village to run a thriving city. The key is to strike the right balance between having enough resources to sustain the population or spending them on new technical and scientific advances that will allow the city to evolve and grow.
Like other city-building games, the resources provided by the land must be used to the maximum, building houses for the citizens, farms to feed them, manufacturing workshops to provide them with work and cover their needs, and so on. In addition, it will be essential to keep pace with history in terms of constant research, so that your society can cope with historical processes such as famines, severe weather or the characteristics of each of the seasons of the year.
So-called “happiness” is one of the characteristic indicators of the game, which must be regulated at all times by the player in the face of various social complexities and challenges that will arise without warning. Each citizen has his or her own interests and needs, ranging from immigration to high taxation, employment, religion, family, and so on. Every decision that the player (Patron) makes will be represented in the various social groups and will manifest itself even years later.

The post Patron first appeared on History Lab.
