Teniers’s scene depicts an alchemist fanning the flames of the hearth with a bellows. In the work space, he piles objects for his profession in a disorderly manner on the shelves and niches of the walls. In the background, his assistant converses with two representatives of the bourgeoisie, who compositionally replace the typical peasants of his surgical scenes.
