The theme developed in this work by Juan and Miguel González is part of a set of 24 panels made using the cork-work technique. It depicts the presentation of gifts to Cortés and his men by Moctezuma and his companions. This passage of the Conquest was narrated by numerous chroniclers and inspired the authors of several pictorial series. The set, destined for Charles II to add to the royal collections, is painted using the technique of “enconchado”. This is applied to a wooden support lined with linen cloth and sometimes a gesso preparation is applied, with animal glue, fragments of nacre are applied and then covered with the pictorial layer.
