La Tour’s painting shows four figures around a table playing cards. On the right a well-dressed young man is shown with his cards, while the other figures are set to one side, showing their complicity. In the centre of the composition one of the women, a maid serving a glass of wine to another, shows complicity by distracting the young man while the gambler, looking directly at the spectator, draws an ace to win the hand and thus the game. Customs which, on the other hand, have been picked up even up to the present day as a symbol of roguery and picaresque.
